You can get additives like redex that aren't taxed as a fuel. So how much veg oil can you add as an 'additive' rather than as a 'fuel' so you don't have to cought up tax to the inland revenue?? There must be a percentage of additive allowed but where to find the magic number?
Lidl is good for cheap veg oil.0 -
You can't add any amount of veg oil to your car without keeping records and paying the relevant tax, it applies on every penny!.
If you buy Biodiesel from Ebay, and most forecourts, then its usually tax paid by the producer / retailer and you don't need to declare it.
There are different blends of Bio, nearly all diesels will run on 95% blends, and most German diesels will run on a 50/50 mix - however there are very few which will run on 100% Bio without some form of fuel line modification.
So if you buy the Ebay stuff, then you would probably be better adding 25ltrs of regular diesel topped up with 25ltrs of the Veggie diesel and running at 50/50 mix. Not as attractive money saving wise, but may save hassle with seals and pump bearings in the future.0 -
It all depends on whether you want to use SVO, WVO or biodiesel for reasons of moneysaving or the environment or both. SVO doesn't help your pocket much but does save the planet, WVO is undoubtedly the best option for both and biodiesel is usually only a 5% veg oil blend and therefore still 95% bad for the environment.
Don't need to spend a lot of money on a kit for all cars. Older VW and Mercs seem to be particularly happy on 100% SVO/WVO for most of the year (even with the cold here in Scotland), the only modification on my VW Golf 1.9D is a simple heat exchanger between the coolant and fuel pipes to keep the oil nice and runny to get better combustion. Many people have run in excess of 100,000 miles in the same car on 90-100% veg.
Smells better than diesel, makes a nicer sound, more pennies in my pocket, local Chinese takeaway doesn't have to pay to get rid of it's waste oil, recycling for the planet's sake. It can be a bit messy filtering the oil, but for fuel at 47p/litre who cares?0
