Talk Talk and 18418?

Hi all,
Can anyone explain this to me. My mum's been on talk talk for calls only for some time, while paying rental to BT. She's always used the 18418 prefix whenever dialling abroad.
I recently upgraded her to Talk Talk's Global anytime plan where you pay them rent as well as calls. The next day she couldn't make international calls via 18418 but could directly. Can anyone explain and will calling directly be costing her more?
Also, what is the point of the 18418 prefix if all calls are going via talktalk anyway? Is 18418 a third party? And do otherwise free calls via talktalk direct (like USA/Canada in the evenings) get charged for if you use 18418?
I've emailed talktalk but their explanation is brief and doesn't explain anything.
To add to that when I check the activation status online i see the date i requested the upgrade - 30/08 and then see the 'Your go-live date' as 03/09 and then another date below 11/09 which states 'You're now live'. So did it become alive 03/09 or will it be live 11/09? To confuse things further Talktalk replied that i won't be live until 16/09 and this is also stated on the modem pack i got today.
Sorry if I'm going on here...but any input appreciated. Cheers
