Memory upgrade?

To all you clever techies out there, now and again I get a warning that my pc is low on virtual memory . The question I am asking is if I upgrade my memory from 512 mb to 1 gb would this solve the problem or is virtual memory something different from physical memory.
The next question is:-
if I compress my old files as recommended by windows to save disc space (78% used) would I still be able to use my pc in the same manner, or would I have to search high and low for the file each time I wanted to run a programme?
Thanks in anticipation.

Virtual memory should be managed by Windows, if you keep getting the messages check your settings.
In control panel select System then Properties and on the advanced tab under Performance select settings then advanced and under virtual memory then advanced make sure you have ticked to allow windows to manage your page file size.
As for compressing your files, yes you will still find them all in the same place !
Have you cleaned up your disc with any cleanup applications, that will help too
Oh and yes, increasing your memory from 512mb will help too !0 -
It's more likely you are running low on disc space, and VM is complaining, how much free space do you have on your C drive?
To speed the PC up, boosting the RAM to at least 1Gb, will make an enormous difference, 2Gb even better.

I have approx 10gb left of an available 38.8gb.It's more likely you are running low on disc space, and VM is complaining, how much free space do you have on your C drive?

Will increasing the memory size make a big difference taking into account the pc is about 5-6 years old?
Or is the pc shall we say.......past it!
p.s other than the above it works fine.0
