Power Consumption Help - Panasonic Plasmo vs LCD

Hi,

Im looking to buy a LCD or Plasma TV after my CRT Sony TV gave up on itself this week, RIP:(

Did some research and have decided on the Panasonic Veira range.

Now I have it down to 2 TV's, 1 Plasma and 1 LCD

The Panasonic TH-42PZ80B 42in Plasma or the TX-37LZD80 37in LCD.

I was wondering if you clever people could tell me what would be roughly the difference in running each if I gave you the power consumption figures as this might be the deciding factor on which I choose. :)

The Plasma:
Power Consumption (W)
Rated385.0
Assumptive Actual Use (Wh)324.0

The LCD
Power Consumption (W)
Rated190.0
Assumptive Actual Use150.0

Say for example each tv was used 10hrs a day over a year what would the difference be in cost to run:confused:

Thanks

A millionaire should not need to ask about the running costs!

    :D

    I am not a proper millionaire, I am a pauper millionaire:D

Thanks for the help espresso, going by your figures I think I will go for the LCD as the difference is quite a lot over the year.

Its not actually as 'clear cut' as that as plasmas actually use a lot LESS power in darker scenes whilst LCDs have a constant 'backlight' running. Overall the LCD will be cheaper still, but not by a great deal and Panasonic Plasmas have superior picture quality to their LCD counterparts. (Though I highly recommend a PIONEER plasma if you went for one as theyre the best in the world)

10 hours use per day, blimey! Our TV is lucky if it sees 4-5 a day in the winter, and 1-2 in the summer!

I'd factor in eye tests every month for that amount of goggle-boxing! ;)

You could wait until LED backlit LCD TVs appear, they should use even less power (Mac laptops have these in at present).

Completely agree. There is very little difference in power consumption between a plasma and a LCD despite what the salesperson will tell you in Currys/Comet/Dixons. Having purchased a a 42" Pioneer 428XD plasma 8 months ago (replaced a 32" Sony CRT) i can say my leccy bill is more or less the same.

You've made a very wise choice with the Panny Viera. Pioneers are rated the best, but these Pannies come a very close second ! What do you want ? A slightly better picture or the cheaper to run TV ?

The plasma will actually use 170W, the LCD 120W as tested by Which.
  • Hi 2p worth then

My plasma 42" runs up at 270W: Ten hrs is 2.7KW @12p/Kw =32.4p/day

    1yr = 32.4p X 352days = £114.04p NOT £388.80p

Please get a Panny very good picture
  • Hi, Thanks everyone for the advice.

The Assumption figures for the LCD and Plasma are direct from the Panasonic site and according to them they take into account fluctuations in power usage by plasma's by testing them watching a test programme, for a set amount of time, to arrive at the Assumption figure.

Anyway I have decided to purchase an LCD but did not get a Panasonic in the end. :o

Me and the OH went to a few stores to get a hands on look and OH did not like the Panasonics look with its prutuding bottom bar.

So had a browse round the local stores and went for a Sony 40in LCD which also had a good picture running SD and HD.

Got back and ordered it online from John Lewis with Free delivery and Free 5 year guarantee:D

and it was cheaper than it was in Argos, Comet, Currys, Empire direct, PCworld etc just for the TV.:D

    .

    :rotfl: No I don't watch TV for 10 hours a day:D.

Its going to be the main family TV and because we all work different shifts, everyone watches it a different times, then of course the kids want to watch their programmes as well so it all adds up. In fact its about 7 hours a day usage between everyone.
