Still paying home insurance for my OLD address!!

I moved house just over two years ago. When I moved I called my home insurance provider (Payment Shield), told them I was moving & gave them the details of my new address.
I recently examined my bank statement & found that they were taking two payments from me - one for my new address & one for my old address!!
When I called them to query this they informed me that the policy had not been cancelled - which is rubbish - as otherwise how would they have my new details?? Unfortunately it was all done over the phone - so I have nothing in writing!
I know that I am in the wrong for not checking my bank statements & querying this before now.
When I spoke to them they said that I probably would not be due a refund - but that they would contact me in a few days to let me know.
Does anyone know where I stand? Should I get a refund - I don't see why they should keep the money - as it is their error & they have had the money for doing nothing - as there would never have been a claim for that address as I wasn't living there!!!
It comes to around £800.00 in total.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!!

2 years and you didn't notice? You must win an award for that.
Did out any paperwork they sent. I'm sure most companies "transfer" rather than start a new policy.0 -
I had much the same experience with that Company a few years back - fortunately noticed a lot sooner and they repaid my premiums!0

My present (and past) insurer(s) always send a renewal notice with address of insured property - I presume your insurer doesn't do this. This is a problem with uncorroborated phone calls, no evidence of what was said. WRITE to them tell them you sold house on xxxx and thus have no interest in it and therefore would not have taken out insurance and insist on refund - it is their mistake.
Finally after you receive refund CHANGE INSURER at renewal date.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
You could try speaking to the bank about the direct debit guarantee? Essentially, if you did cancel the old insurance they should not have taken the money and your bank will guarantee that money back to you. Never had to it myself, just the sort of thing one picks up watching working lunch
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

With all of my moves i had to start new policies each time due to having to cover both houses between exchange and completion..
Being very "MSE" i know my bank statements inside out so would pick up a double charge!0 -
Thanks to everyone for your help - my insurers called me today & admitted full liability - they will be refunding the full amount in the next three days!
I will certainly pay much more attention to my bank statements from now on!!0 -
Well done!
I did a similar thing and the insurance company refunded me once I'd proved that I'd moved when I said I did.
Silly thing, but very easy to do. :rolleyes:Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
