  • I know some people hate braces but i would really prefer them. Believe it or not in the past hour that tooth i had filled isnt so sensitive anymore. I can touch it now without feeling pain or anything. The dentist was ideal as it was the first one i knew of that gave the sedation jag. However in the waiting room today i heard many people were going to the other dentist at the practice as the one i went to was apparantly terrible, very unhelpful and generally arrogant...a side which i saw today. In Glasgow City Centre i have came across a few notice boards for places that advertise doing teeth whitening and cosmetic work. Im not sure if thats the ideal place to phone or wether a dental hospital is more appropriate. Again im not sure how that works, if i would need to pay for them to look at my teeth or anything.

The only thing i will say is.After i got my filling today she never asked me to come back. I noticed she even cleaned all my teeth and they look a million times better, which only fuels my deicison to have braces even more because im one step closer to seeing just how good they could look. Just a small teeth clean has boosted my confidence. So as far as im aware im fine. I said i some discomfort at the other side of my mouth, but she checked that and never said anything of it. Im not in pain with it so i guess all is fine. She just told me to take more brushing my teeth.

So thats basically it. Does anyone know if its true that you can get braces and pay so much per month towards them, like a direct debit? I work contract work so im not always in work. I dont really have that kind of money to pay out all at once. Plus ive never really been in debt so my credit card limit is only at £1200. I know thats not enough. But certainly if i could pay in installments i would jump at the chance.

I'm based in scotland as well (edinburgh) and have just started seeing a fabulous dentist after 10 years of not seeing them as I have a massive phobia.I am the same age as you, and one of the issues i have is squint front teeth. My dentist has been more than happy to discuss all the options with me and is quite happy to provide braces fo an adult - it may be that you need to find an alternative dentist.

If you are anywhere near edinburgh then I can give you my dentists name as he is fantastic - and this is from a major phobic.

Sounds perhaps you saw an NHS Dentist today who has provided you with the treatment you needed today - and that Im afraid is it. Or so it seems to be nowadays if you are NHS. You get treatment that is needed, not treatment you may want - that's cosmetic and not covered by the NHS.

Look at Toothsmiths signature and follow the steps there for finding yourself a good private dentist

Forget the tooth whitening places, you need an orthodontist. Most in my area will treat adults privately and they usually offer a payment plan.

First of all, you need to find a general dentist you're happy with.

An orthodontist won't do check ups, clean teeth, check for fillings etc.

Find a general dentist and see if you are suitable, or not, to be referred to an orthodontist. Orthodontists just move teeth around. You'll need the help and support of a general dentist throughout the orthodontic treatement, so find one of those first.

I think the one you have seen sounds like they've done an excellent job. Just remember, you'd be pretty zonked out if you were seeing them under sedation. Plus - the dentist couldn't really take what you were saying that seriously, due to the drugs. Yes - you might have told him you wanted to see an orthodontist, but you might just have easily told him that you wanted to fly to the moon, or see him naked in a bath of milk!!!

You can't expect him to take the thinks you say seriously when you're doped up to the eyeballs. And he probably doesn't even realise that you've remembered how he responded.

Go and have a talk to him when you're 'sober'. I'm sure he will be much more helpful then.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Hello,

I'm 29 and my braces will be removed just after my 30th birthday.

I'm an NHS patient in England and was referred to an orthodontist through my dentist because I wanted to reduce the gap in my top teeth (huge) and sort out overcrowding on the bottom row.

I had a three-year wait but only needed braces for five months until the Dr said things were in place.

It cost me just under £200 which I paid off in stages.

The first couple of weeks were a bit rough and I have to carry a toothbrush everywhere with me because I'm paranoid about trapped food (ick), so if you do get them fitted and have any questions then give me a shout.

I was dying to ask the orthodontist if the braces would cause problems in the bedroom, ahem, but I bottled it..had to find another mixer though, as you're advised to avoid diet coke.

  • Well i asked her while she was trying to find a vein in my arm. She answered my question before i got the injection. Im not faulting her work in any way. But i made sure to ask while i wasnt sedated. Would it not be possible for me to go and see an orthodontist about any options i may have and just see my regular dentist when and if i need treatment? Or does an orthodontist only see people that have been specifically sent to them?
Today was over 2 years since i was there and all i needed was that filling. Its not as if my teeth are rotting away.

I done my own measurements and the gap between my 2 front teeth is approximately 20mm. Also the 5 small thinner teeth directly under have gaps, some are slightly longer than others. Other than that my teeth seem to be fine. Ive no idea about cost. All i know is the rest of my teeth look and are fine. I personally cant see me needing braces for long, but what do i know. I would rather wear braces as they are more permanant.

Thanks to all of you who have replyed. As for what you said toothsmith, i did ask, and made a point of asking before anything was done. This was a good 5 minutes before she even left to get the syringe. And those were the answers given to me. And to be quite honest i do like the work she does, shes very gentle and good with me but my confidence has been knocked a little. This has been something thats been on my mind for a while, and me even asking about it considering how i feel about my teeth took a lot of guts. Especially when theres 2 assistants standing over me and another dentist there ready to administer the sedation too. My confidence about it has went down a little but i still want to seek out as much info as i can and get an idea of what i can get done and how much it will cost.
  • Are you sure the gap is 20mm? that is huge, it is 2 cm!!!

You can ask for a referral to see an orthodontist privately.
You can pay the one my daughter goes to in monthly payments after a large deposit. We paid 250 then 75 per month.

Treatment usually takes 12 to 18 months then a retainer is needed for about 6 months.

Gaps between the top two front teeth can be difficult to close completely without surgery to remove the fibrous band that goes between them. You can get them very close though which looks fine.

Only the orthodontist you use will know how long and how much it will cost.
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

Orthodontists do tend to only see people on referral.

I still think you have a very good dentist there, and shouldn't change. You need a lot of support when you are working with a sedated patient. This just shows that your safety and well-being is a priority for them.

This could be the reason the dentist wasn't willing to talk about the options at length. With all those staff in there, the hourly rate of running that surgery would be huge, and she wouldn't want the time being wasted with something that just you and she could discuss at a later date. Maybe she should have put things a bit better, but I can see why she was keen to get on.

As B.C. said above, 20mm is an enormous 'gap' between your teeth - it would be practically the same as having both of your middle front teeth missing!

Do you mean 20mm overbite? (The gap between the biting edge of your upper teeth and the biting edge of your lower teeth). Even so, that's gettng on for a Ken Dodd/Cilla Black sort of overbite!

If it is a 20mm gap between your teeth, then it's going to need something false putting in there, not orthodontics. Ortho just can't close a gap like that.

If it's a 20mm overbite, it might be possible, but it might be jaw surgery your looking at to correct it.

If it's a 2mm gap, then ortho could easily work.

  • I'm no dental professional, but to be honest, it just sounds like your dentist was busy/distracted with the task in hand, and didn't really have time to discuss your cosmetic options at that point in time.

I would suggest making another appointment with the dentist, purely to discuss your options. I'm getting crowns for cosmetic reasons, and I went to see my dentist for my 6 monthly check up, and let him know I'd saved the cash required - I then went down for another appointment to chat about what exactly I wanted. Dentists have to run a pretty tight ship - and it is rather irritating when they run late when you're waiting for your appointment. Just give them a call and ask to see her again for a discussion.
