I have got a Windows Xp home edition SP3 computer (which has Avira Antivir Personal installed) that freezes the web pages if I try and open another page in Internet Explorer. It does this about 50% of the time and its starting to really really really annoy me!
The only way I can get out of the page is 'control Alt delete, which as you can imagine gets quite tedious after a while.
Has anybody got any suggestions as to what this could be and any suggestions to fix it please.
Many Thanks
Jay

Have you ample RAM, run Malwarebytes, tried another browser....?
Only since you installed SP3? Tried System Restore?0 -
open task manager (right click on your bottom task bar and select it)
keep this running while you are browsing. see if the CPU or memory spikes at 100% or something when browsing. it could be that IE (or flash/java/etc) is hammering your cpu and making it seem like its locking up.

Hiya thx for that...I have tried that but its only running at about 14%?

Are you using IE7? An issue I had was with IE7's Phishing Filter slowing everything to a crawl and often locking up perfectly innocent webpages ... it may be because it was clashing with other protection software I use. Anyway, might be worth an experiment since it takes seconds to change / change back.
Go to the IE7 browser menu bar ... press the ALT key if it's currently hidden.
Then from the menus ... TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > click on the ADVANCED tab > scroll down to the SECURITY section and look at the PHISHING FILTER and if it's not already one of the 3 options selected, click on TURN OFF AUTOMATIC WEBSITE CHECKING ... and see whether your browsing experience improves.
If not, don't forget to retrace your steps and set the Phishing control back to whatever it was before.

No, you don't need SP3 if you had kept your PC up to date until that point. Get rid of it using System Restore to see if that get's rid of the problem.
You can always reinstall it later if you feel that you need it.0 -

Do you delete internet Explore once you have installed Firefox? If so do you loose anything?
Thanks.

NEVER uninstall IE if thats the one that came with your machine ~ uninstalling anything by Microsoft that came with the operating system is a VERY bad idea. Just use firefox as is (It will need the PLUGINS installing like FLASH etc but thats no problem and no different to using IE)
However. For your ACTUAL problem I would suggest uninstalling Service Pack 3 (I know its a pain but nothing major). Get to the point to reinstall it and have nothing else running except your firewall for the best install.:idea:0
