Low electricity tariff
Hey all,
A friend of a friend asked me purely hypothetically ;-) a question. If your electricity company put you on an incorrect tariff which was far lower than expected (call centre typo type stuff), are you liable if/when they find out and decide to try to issue you with a backdated bill?
I understand and agree with the fact that if you're charged with estimated readings you can be landed with a big bill, but what if the company has been charging you incorrectly. Can they claim it back? Are they legally able to?
My gut says no, if I manage to buy a car for £1000 that's worth £10,000 and no-one picked up on the typo I feel it's their mistake. They can't come back 6 months later and claim I owe them £9000. Just wondering if there are any legal eagles out there with knowledge of the law surrounding utility companies.
Cheers!
