Router/Modem&Router/Access Point

Options
Hi, I am looking into going wireless but am a bit confused about what I actually need to get e.g. Router/Modem&Router/Wireless Access Point. I currently have a BT Voyager 100 ADSL modem, can I use this with a router or do I have to get a new router/modem? Any help would be appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken the Modem you have connects to the computer by USB cable. All routers at the moment only allow modem connections by a RJ45 network plug so you would not be able to use the current modem to connect to the router.

However; this does not stop you buying a wireless router which would be connected to your main computer through a network cable, you could then set up internet connection sharing from your computer which has the modem connected to.

The downside of this is your main computer would always need to be on for you to connect to the internet from other computers.

Personally I would recommend getting a modem/router and keep your bt modem in case of problems as a back up. A modem/router is easy to set up and it also means you don't need your main computer left on as all will connect to the internet through the modem/router.
    Welcome, rogerramjet.

Is there a solution to this yet? I've got a voyager usb modem and just bought a linksys router. Are they totally incompatible or is there a way to connect them? Thanks in advance.

A broadband router replaces the modem, you no longer need it. connect the PC to router (using ethernet or wireless), router to phone point

Sorry, Albertross, this is not strictly speaking always true, as a broadband router does not have a modem unless it says it does - e.g. those for cable use do not have a built-in ADSL modem.

Be careful with what you buy!
(USB modems will never be able to plug in to routers, but it's a long story)

OK, I'll be more specific then:

    Jaymac,

A broadband ADSL (for BT lines) router replaces the modem, if you have bought one of those as opposed to a cable/DSL (for cable) linksys router, you no longer need a modem.

If you have a BT line, and have bought a cable/dsl router, take it back to the shop and swap it.

Well sign up with AOL, get a free one, I use a speedtouch 576 wireless router via dsl and ethernet.

I currently disable the wireless route as I don't have another outlet for it.

The router doesn't actually seem to say ASDL or cable/DSL. It's a Linksys WRT54GS-UK 125 Mbps Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster. Did I get the wrong one?

What you have bought is a wireless router, you need is a wireless router with a built in modem, so that you can bin the Voyager 100 USB thingy!

    these are for BT lines

    These are for cable:

The cable ones are usually £10-15 cheaper than the equivalent ADSL model.

You have bought a cable model.

There is little (or no) benefit in buying a 108 model over a 54 model, as far as web surfing is concerned, because the speed is determined by your ISP connection speed, which is likely to be <8Mbps.. so a 54 Mbps router can easily cope with that download speed.
