1st NEW FLAT - What do i do? please HELP!!

Options
Hi all,

I have recently (8 days ago) moved into a new 1 bed flat. This is my first ever property and so i have no idea of my annual comsumption for the price comparison sites. How should i work this out?

The flat is ALL ELECTRIC. My current supplier (or the previous tenant's) is EDF Energy. I have not contacted them yet - what is their best tariff or should i switch?

Apparently British Gas is cheapest for me too but i read in one of Martin's emails that this is due to increase soon? Is that rigth or can i still go with them?

Also, the tenancy is only for a year - is it worth changing given it takes up to 8 weeks?

Thanks!

First things first. Did you get your initial meter readings and do you have access to your meter? If so you should have access to enough data to calculate your base daily useage beyond that you will have to calculate heating of course. But if you don't have your initial readings or access to the meters you will have bigger problems than choosing a new supplier.

Hi Ri..you need to register with EDF. Give the meter figures from day one.
Start taking weekly readings. You may be on E7 tariff.
    Are there storage heaters ?
  • It would be almost unbelievable if the tariff you have 'inherited' is anywhere near the cheapest for you, tbh. Reason being the vast majority of the UK public don't seem to care that they are paying over the odds (the people on here are very much atypical of the general public). I would recommend you have a look around and see what cheaper alernatives there are out there (I'd be surprised if there isn't even a cheaper EDF tariff for you to go on).

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Hi all thanks for the replies!

Yes i have access to meters and i have the readings from when i moved in!

Also, there are two numbers on the meter and YES i do have (!!!!!!) storage heaters - does this mean i have an ECONOMY 7 system?

Is the E7 tariff ok? or should i be switching? I will work out my average daily consumption then work out an approx annual figure (derrrrr never thought of that!)

Would BG internet tariff still be cheaper?

Do you have problems with your circulation? Are you fit? Is the flat insulated? Are you out working during the day? If so, then the primary excess cost of Economy 7 and storage heaters comes from the fact that you can't use the heating only when it's cold. You have to guess eighteen hours in advance what the temperature will be like the following evening and then decide whether or not to gamble on using the heaters. In our current climate, storage heating is an absolute con.
  • Click energy 5 is £5 cheaper over the year for me, check uswitch with actual kwh usage/guess
Im staying with ebico as can work out exactly how much my bill is going to be and is always in the top 3 cheapest 4 me on uswitch and doesn't require moving tarrif from say click energy 4 to click energy 5.
Economy 7 is cheaper with ebico in manweb region at mo if you use over approx 30% at night, different for every supplier though.
Best thing to do is make a guess now, put the readings somewhere safe and then compare after 12 months to see who's the cheapest for the amount you use.
