Commiseration Gift

Not really sure where to post this but as this board seems to be the one for gift ideas I've plumped for this one (as opposed to the families one) despite it not being a celebratory gift.

My Granny had her purse pickpocketed whilst out shopping at the weekend. She's in her 80's and it was taken from her zipped handbag. The purse has now been found (in a nightclub) but obviously the £50 she'd had for her shopping trip was gone. It's such a shame as she's always loved shopping but can't get out so much now my Grandad has died so she'd saved up for it.

She's very proud and wouldn't accept cash/vouchers but I really want to get her something to try and make up for a major shortfall in her pension money. She lives a couple of hundred miles away so it has to be something I could easily post or have delivered to her. I thought of flowere but whilst that might cheer her up, it's not going to help pay the bills.

Any tought / ideas?

That's so awful. People are disgusting.

You could send her an Abel and Cole veg box - it's £11, but you can get £10 back via Quidco. If you tell her that then it might help? Add in some bread, meat or fish maybe too.

what about finding a supermarket that delivers to her address such as sainsburys, tesco etc and make up a food hamper?

  • or if she wont accept cash what about food stamps for sainsburys or asda, or post office stamps which can be used to pay any bills at the post office which is where most pensioners pay for there gas, leccy, phone, tv bills etc.

Thanks for the thought. She seems to live on tinned salmon sandwiches and chocolate though so that would be quite a bizarre order. I'm going to live on jam sandwches and chocolate when I get to her age. When we visit she cooks for us but then eats a salmon sandwich herself.

a similar thing happened to my gran. I was absolutely furious. I think the best thing to get her is a treat. Buy her something completely frivolous that she'd never buy for herself, but that she loves.

  • This exact same thing happened to my 76 year old nan today, they took her purse with £60 in it, withdrew £750 out of the bank within minutes and tried to get £3000 from her M&S Credit card, thankfully by then it had been cancelled... It's disgusting what people will do to the elderly!

Things like this make me so mad :( Hope both Nans aren't too shook up with it all. And well I hope the evil scum who did it die a long and painful death.

post office coupons are great idea, as is the veg box.
