Chasing light switch/cable into wall - how to do it properly?

  • Most of the Electrical advice on these forums is not good

And some of it potentially lethal. I'm amazed by electrical advice offered by people who clearly don't even understand it themselves. The "what wire goes where in a ceiling rose" are my favourites :rotfl:

  • Hi,

Many thanks for the extra replies which I've just read.

Sparky, you are quite right, in an ideal world I would like to have all the electrics checked out and the type of "RCD" protection you mention installed, but this house has had so many unexpected horrors which have cost a fortune to sort out that I really can't stretch at the moment to more bills.

The "fuse board" itself is modern in the sense it is not one of the old ones you wire up but as far as I can see it doesn't have the RCD thing. I may look to do this in the future but not at the moment.

The switch is in the kitchen. The other sockets and light switches are done really poorly, just buried no depth at all into plaster but I can see them and therefore avoid them when putting the kitchen in and will just have to be careful.

All I was looking for was some general advice really on how to do a proper job of burying the cable and box in the wall.

It is a simple switch which operates only one light (I think that's what you mean by 1 gang) and I would draw where the wires go before I unwire it all so I can be sure I'm putting them back in the right place.

I just know that the wires shdnt be buried direct into plaster (as other ones in the kitchen have been) and wanted to be sure I was doing this bit properly.

    Thanks for the advice though.

    Kind regards,
  • Just turn off the main switch on your fuseboard,Or if you are confidant just the lighting circuit,Take off the switch, bury the cable, cover it,Put it in your metal box,Connect the Earth (if you have one green or green/yellow) to the metal box,Reconnect switch (2 holes 2 wires) anyway around,It does not matter with lights,Power on-test.

You are totally within your rights to carry out this work in your own house and no condictions or Regs apply,And as mentioned its "not Rocket Science"
Go for it and save yourself £80-£100 (thats what i would charge you) You will be fine!
