Its mostly fiction and poetry that Ive been working on but I do dabble in scripts when the moment calls for it. You may find http://community.livejournal.com/start_writing/ useful, they have several articles on fantasy fiction too and tons of writing tips!

I have plans to do a picture book for my little grandchildren. Won't be doing fancy expensive stuff will be using Blurb. My DIL is an amazing artist and she is illustrating whilst DD is going to edit the work I put with it. I's based on a game we played with ours when they were little and it still creeps into conversation. Doing this for love and no other reason.... http://www.blurb.com/ My niece used them to have her mums journals printed it looks great.

I write and have an English/Creative Writing degree though I am concentrating more on painting at the moment. Could point you in the direction of some good books that might help you if you like?

I write for extra income and for pleasure, but I have always written for my children too, I love writing and it gave me a lot of enjoyment to write for the children. I wrote letters to them two or three times each year and I collected all the letters in an A5 folder with plastic pouches. I wrote about how much we loved them, what they were doing at school, funny things they did or said, that sort of thing My oldest daughter is now 19 and she was so pleased when I gave her the folder.

I always wrote individual letters from Father Christmas and I always illustrated them with pen and ink drawings, I saved them after Christmas and collected them together to make a little book. I also included their letters to Santa and their Christmas lists. It is so nice to look back on all those memories and the funny things they wrote.

When we went on holiday I helped the children to create a diary/scrap book to show where they went and what they did. It was a good way to calm them down at the end of each day and they love looking through them now.

I made up stories for them about all sorts of things, they would tell me what they wanted the stories to be about. It was fun, sometimes I would draw pictures for the stories, sometimes I asked them to do the drawing. When they started to write poems and stories I saved the nicest ones and typed them up on the computer. I am going to put them all together in a book for their 21st birthdays.

Whatever you choose to do it will be special because it is so personal. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed creating the things for my children.

I wonder if the stories and diaries played a part in my eldest daughter's decision to study English at university.

well writing down the bones was the first one i thought of, also Anne Lamott's Bird by bird. They were the most useful, practical writing textbooks I used in my degree.

I wrote a sort of historic/romance type story about three years back and keep meaning to follow on from it with a couple of the characters but haven't got around to it............yet. Always seems I've got too much other stuff to do.
Wasn't brilliant but I enjoyed doing it, something I'd always wanted to have a go at.

  • I made a little book for my daughter and It wasn't really anything that spectacular in writing terms, but I hope it will be a keepsake for her to treasure.
