Ciao vs other review sites

Options
I like writing reviews and need a bit of extra money so I thought I'd give Ciao a try. I've been browsing through it the last new nights and I think I understand the general jist of it but there's a few things I'm unclear on....

1) In the help section it says you can earn money on products that have £ signs next to them. Where am I supposed to be looking for this £ sign?!

2) How much profit have people made from Ciao?

3) Is it worth the effort? And if not what sites do people recommend?

Thank you :) I did have a search on this forum but couldn't find much info on Ciao except for the surveys.

Once you have registered and you click on a product name it will bring you up a description and you may see a £ or even ££ or even £££ beside the product name. Not all products pay you for writing reviews.

Making money on Ciao can be very slow, but if you write good detailed reviews and get plenty of reads and comments the pennies will eventually mount up. You have to read, rate and comment on other people's reviews to encourage them to read and rate yours, a bit of give and take. You can only withdraw your money once you have reached over £5.00.

Many people combine writing on Ciao with writing on DooYoo, there is also a DooYoo thread on here and you can read up on that. It is perfectly ok to publish the same review on more than one site, but most people state that they do this.

I am sure there will be others along with more/better information and advice.
  • Well i recomend HelpHound who pay fairly.
Heres my referal thread on it if you get what i mean :p

But ive also just started DooYoo which is nice cos i can write reviews on DVDs i have watched which is good when youre signed up to Tesco DVD Rental but i dont know how good payment is cos i only started 2 days ago.
  • Thanks for the help, I'll look into those two sites aswell. Gonna go on Ciao later to see if I can find any of those £ signs! :)

I used to write quite a bit for Ciao and made about £20 a month. I got annoyed with it though as two of my reviews were moved into the wrong place.

One was for Snowboard clothing - pants - the other for snowboard clothing Jacket. they were OK for a few days - but then turned up in Equestrian and some other obscure place.

Customer service said they could move item reviews about so there wasnt much they could do - So how did they get moved in the first place - basically I think they couldnt be bothered - and reading other contributers tales - they dont have much success with the Ciao admins either.

But if you like writing then go for it - it can improve your writing style quite a bit.

  • Make sure your reviews are top notch, the regulars on Ciao (ie the ones without a life away from a computer) can be evil if your review doesn't meet their standards. It is a really cliquey place.

As you may have guessed, I no longer bother
  • can anyone tell me when the money from your rates and reads shows up on your account? i've posted some reviews and had some reads (some on a £££ review) but my account balance still says £0.00 ? bloody ciao. why do they make it so difficult? i write on dooyoo too, they seem much nicer.
  • Ciao is one of the worst paying review sites. You will struggle to make £5 a month. On dooyoo.co.uk you can earn potentially £20/30 per month. helium is hit and miss but is a constant slow earner as is epinions.com

  • Ciao is a nightmare as you have to review to a rather formulaic standard to keep the regulars happy, all who insist on over detailed over worded reviews. Its a review site not a creative writing site for heavens sake.

When you are registered and logged into ciao, open up the product category you are interested in - the £signs appear after the title of the product at the top of the page, in small grey text (not the most obvious thing, I know). Not all products have payments made for reviews on them, though. I think it is something to do with how much the site needs/wants reviews on that item. So, a DVD that has 20 reviews already is unlikely to offer payment (or might offer it at the lowest level), but a new software release that has no reviews will likely have a higer £ rating. Plus, you will get extra for posting the first review in a product category for the first month.

Profit - not a huge amount, especially since the ciao surveys have moved to a seperate site and account. Very little from reads, most of my money comes from the premiuem fund, which is given out each month - very variable, from £2 to £10 a month on top of reads money I would reckon. And I have been a member for a long time, so I quite quite a lot of reads per review!

It is fun, but if you are more interested in reviewing for money, I would try dooyoo first.
