Failed a module as FullTime student, so going PT, lots of problems!

Options
In my course should you fail 1 module, you have to resit it in the summer and i did and failed.

So now next year i will have to do 1 course; and so am only regarded as a part time student.
I do have a part time job, but not many hours are available, so i need the student loans, at least for a while. Ive applied for full time support, grants and loans, but now as im a part time student, how can i change this? Will i have to reply?

Also, my landlord wants a council tax exemption form before he hands out the keys, all my 3 other house mates will have these, so will there be a problem with that? (I started paying rent at the start of september though!)

How much council tax will i pay? Will we all have to pay council tax?

By the way; I really can do this uni malarke, i think i just didnt give it enough respect first time round =(

Thankyou for your help

If you are not classed as a student you will have to pay full council tax less 25% discount as the others are students.

Contact your place of study and ask them for an exemption certificate. I'm not sure how this works for part time students.

Have you grants etc been approved?

I've changed to part time. I didn't fail any module though and I'm not sure what you mean by doing 1 course next year?

Do you mean you have to catch up with the one module before you can go back and carry on the rest of your degree?

Re finance - you will not get CT exemption unless you are doing quite a lot of hours as it is for full time students. I am doing 50 % of a full time course and don't qualify for it, if that helps. You will likely get lumped with 75% of the council tax for the whole house, which could be expensive if it is big?

You can get a grant towards tuition fees but no loan. The max grant is £1040 per year (approx) and is made up of £700ish towards tuition fees and a £255 grant for books etc. You can get the full tuition fee grant with an income up to around £16k if you are single and the £255 with an income up to around £28k (I think).

You need to put a stop on your full time finance because, if they pay it then you will be in strife once the uni tell them you are now part time.

You can apply for the uni hardship fund but at my uni you have to be doing at least 50% of a full time course to qualify.

Are you sure part time is right for you?

A Council Tax disregard requires 21hrs per week of study, tuition or a combination of the above. What you class as part time may be classed as F/t by the Uni for student certificate purposes.

I'd suggest talking to your University or Students' Union Money Adviser and go through everything as it's quite complicated.

  • oh...my...god. 75% of the council tax on a 4bedroom house and just a grands grant and having to find a job that will let me go to classes part time and me having already signed the tenancy on this house :\ I really don't know what i can do. Will have a talk to student union asap.

I will probably only have about 5 hours of classes a week to go to as its just 1 module (out of 6) i need to retake, so no chance of it being classed as full time.

Rikki: My grants have been approved for a full time course (ive only just found out i will be part time)

Bestpud: Uni is right for me, i wish there was a way i could stay a full time student. I will look into what i can do to top up hours to 21.

Thankyou for all your help guys, if you know of any other info please say.

If its just one module they may refuse to give you an student certificate as the course also has to last at least 26 weeks of one academic year - its down to whether the Uni say its part of the original course or not but if you don't ask you don't get.

check https://www.voa.gov.uk for the banding of the property and then check your local council website to see how much you pay for that band . If you then knock of 25% then you'll get an idea of what the full yearly charge would be.

It's not a question of "topping up" hours, it's whether the course you're on is designated as full or part time.

I didn't suggest uni wasn't right for you, although you have failed this module twice... I wasn't sure if you were going part time through choice and was asking, in light of the financial implications, whether it was right for you.

So can I get this right:

You have to retake the one module and before you can go back fulltime and complete your course?

And there is no way they will allow you to do this alongside your course?

What about if you changed to part time (but 75%) of a full time course (as that may entitle you to the council tax disregard)? The funding you can get would not completely cover the cost of your tuition though so it may not be a viable option. But if you can earn enough to live on...

Or alternatively, find a better paid job, or one with more hours while you do this retake year? That may be your only option tbh.

Does the module have to take all year, or could you be finished by xmas?

Wouldn't it be simpler just to go back and retake the whole year?

Yes, good thinking! I guess it would be, if they allowed it.

We can't repeat modules at my uni though so I'm not sure how they'd come off redoing modules/assessments that they've already received feedback on iyswim?

    Definitely worth looking into though.

Do you have mitigating circumstances OP? And is it a three year course, full time? Plus, have you had funding for any previous courses?
