    LG have a good reputation.

My husband has eyed up the direct drive machine and it will be the next one we buy. He did explain the technicals and why direct drive was better but although it made sense at the time I can't remember a word of it now. Currys sell them (or did I see it in Comet?) so I would suggest if you can that you go and take a look first.
  • Good evening: We have had an LG 7 kg washing machine for 4 years without any hassles. Great for large loads and quieter than my old Whirlpool and Hoover.

My brother bought an LG machine year to replace a dead AEG, they think its a great machine. All the more impressive given he was a service engineer for AEG for years......

    Hi
I have had an LG direct drive washing machine and up to now it has been great. It's very quiet compared to my other one and it has many different programs to choose from. However, having said that, I have had it for 19 months and already the bearings have gone. This time it is okay because it is still under guarantee, but with these new direct drives I have been told by the engineer that if the bearings go then the whole of the plastic casing has to be replaced and not just the bearings, so this could have been an expensive repair.
Having said that, I do use it at least once a day and usually a few times a day at the weekend, so I guess if you weigh up the pros and cons it has already proved it's moneys worth.

    Cheers
if i had known then what i know now

Is it that washing machine that doesnt shake a great deal? Seen the advert years ago when they put money on top of it and it hardly moved.

Well, I hope I'm not going to regret it but I have ordered an 8kg direct drive one from the Co-op.(It was £50 cheaper than Currys).I thought I would go for the bigger load size having three kids but these do go up to 10kg load size. Thanks for all the comments. They have been on the whole complimentry.I'll let you know how I get on when it arrives next Tuesday. :D

Let us know how you get one, our machine wont belong before it packs in and I hate the noise it makes.

We replaced our 10 y.o. AEG with a 7.5 Kg LG washer/drier this summer.
Had replaced brushes on the AEG twice but eventually needed a new motor and the cheapest was nearly £200.
Currys had the LG with £200 off because a new model was coming so we grabbed it.
So far seems excellent - even 1200 spin on large drum seems as good as 1600 on the AEG. Newer model with flat front seems nicer than our rounded front but not worth the extra.
Not sure the direct drive is much better - could cost a fortune to fix. After all Miele still use belt drives.
Make sure you take measurements as LG seems bigger - watch it if your space is tight.

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
