Switching With Prepayment Meters

Options
Just joined forums to get some clear advice on my situation.
Im currently paying for my gas and electric by pre payment meter and my supplier for both is British Gas.
I have a debt to pay on the gas meter but not the electric.
I seem to be in the worst possible scenario and wish to change supplier if possible.
Im seeing Ebico mentioned a lot on this site and wondered if I can switch to them or prefrerably get advice on finding the best supplier and payment method for my situation..
I would be grateful for help in this matter.

Unfortunately you probably won't be able to switch whilst you have an outstanding debt.

It may be possible to switch the electric as you are not in debt on that, and benefit from the savings made to speed up paying off the gas debt.

Alternatively, perhaps you could borrow the money to pay off the current debt allowing you to switch and so benefit from lower prices.
However, you'll need to balance the cost of any interest you'll need to pay on money borrowed vs the gains made by lower prices elsewhere - you effectively have an interest free loan from BG at present.

And even if you could the debt would be repayable more or less immediately. Surely it's best to clear the debt and then move?
  • Having looked at uswitch, I may be able to get a different tariff with BG.
Should i do this for both gas and electric, or just gas and find a new supplier for electric? Could i then get rid of the electric card meter? Ive heard theyre difficult to get rid of!
