Just to draw the line under this: I checked this morning and the balance on the Homebase card was reported as zero - so despite the late payment they were true to their word and didn't charge me the massive amount of accumulated interest.
This has been a salutory warning to steer clear of Buy Now Pay Later schemes.
Many thanks again to everyone who responded. I'm very grateful. This site and its users have saved me a considerable sum.
