high school charging kids to make their DT projects.

Not sure if this is correct board to post on so please move it if im wrong.

Having 3 children at high school, 2 at one school the other at another, I have noticed a varying degree to how they are taught and various benefits to each school. Here in lies my rant, my favourite of the two schools charges the kids 50p per term to make any items in their DT (design and technology) lessons. Further to this kids have to provide their own materials for the project so how can they justify the further expense?

Last term DD1 made a candle holder, we bought the metal and spray paints required for this, term before was cooking and again we provided all ingredients required and her textiles class required all materials and threads to make an item which she did at home as there were never enough servicable machines in school.

Do any other high schools operate the same?

My rant is not about having to provide all the materials required for each section of DT its the extra cost of having to send in 50p per term that annoys me especially when the machinery is never available for them to complete their projects anyway.

You're moaning about £2.00 a year? I know this is a money saving website but that does seems a bit extreme even taking into the account you have 3 kids so the cost would be £6.00 a year..if you really want to be antsy that's less than a penny a day!!!

Life's too short to worry about things like that surely?;)

You know the old saying "take care of the pennies..."

Anyway, the way I read the post, I don't think it's about the amount of money, but the principle of it? £6.00 per year is indeed not very expensive, but if the pupils have to bring in all their materials then one might wonder why the extra charge. After all isn't state education supposed to be free?

OP what is the school reasoning behind this charge?

State Education is. Making candles and egg cup holders isn't.

Each to their own I guess but I wish all I had to worry about was handing over 50p to my daughter 4 times a year. I give her more than that to go to the ice cream man!!!

I think the question here is though, would you be happy to continue to give your daughter 50p+ to give to the ice cream man if the ice cream man didn't give any ice cream in return ;)

  • It's obviously about the principle, Loopy, not the money - no need to over react.

Stef why don't you ask the school or teacher involved? 50p per child, soon adds up. I bet you they add it to school 'funds', and hope nobody complains. My kids' school is always asking for contributions for everything, and we buy most of their books (when I was at school all text and exercise books were supplied!). As I also pay £160 per month for their school coach, I ceremoniously recycle their letters for 'voluntary contributions' for upkeep of school.

    £2 a year x 120 pupils in the school year x 5 years of school = £1200

and none of that has anything to do with the material costs!

If £1200 isn't much to you Loopy Girl, then kindly write out a cheque to "Pinkshoes", and send it to... :D

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

She's not got 120 kids...she's got 3:confused: And I've not got 3, I've got 1. And yes, if I am asked to buy things for the caramel shortcake, candle, 'useful' magazine holder or whatever when she goes to high school then I will. And if they ask me to provide 50p (or the equivalent in 5 years time) then yup, I'll do it and to be honest still think nothing of it. If the OP had came on and was indignant about having to buy all the materials and being asked for £10.00 per term then I could see her point.

My suggestion is, if she is that concerned that she writes to the school and ask for a complete breakdown of where the monies are going as the materials have to be bought.
