Tax Credits - I think we made a mistake...!

In the tax year 2007-2008 I wasn't working (2 kids under3yrs) and my OH has a mixture of working at various jobs and periods of unemployment (we moved around a lot - bad time).

Anyway, tax credit renewal time and they want to know total earnings for the tax year, but as OH wasn't working in April 08 we never recieved a P60 for him. We spent ages trying to find out his earnings, we didn't have anything - wage slips etc (stupid I know...) and had no idea.

A week before the tax credit renewal day we rang up and were told we would have to give a total or our payments would stop. They had down an estimation of £12,480, so we had to hazard a guess and said £11,140.

Since then we've realised they don't include JSA income based in the total (is this right?) and we think we have over-estimated his actual earnings - it was probably more like £8-9k.

What should I do? What happens now, will they check up on this? What will change? Am I being overpaid now? Aaargh!

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you, x

    Not sure re JSA.

I wouldn't think you have been overpaid anyway though,as your actual income was lower not higher than your estimate.
I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along to advise,I'm not sure whether you can be paid what you are owed from a closed claim but maybe this tears tax credit award maybe be raised.Certainly not something you need to lose any sleep over!
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
  • Thanks, I just don't want to have any probs with TC!
I don't think I could be paid anything, even if I was owed anything as we still don't know an exact figure for the tax year.
Luckily we are now settled in lovely rented house and OH has landed a brilliant secure job, so we should be able to have exact annual amounts from now on.

Just one question tho, when I rang TC this time to advise of his new work/pay, they asked for estimated annual income but said that they don't include JSA income based in the annual total. Is this right? We had a letter from JSA saying that the amount he had received from them was taxable, does this make any difference?
So I worked out he had 19 wks of JSA which I didn't count and then 33 wks of income, which I have totalled and this is the amount I gave them. Does this sound about right?! x

Being taxable and being included are two different things HOWEVER the WTC form does ask for social security benefits paid.
  • you need the expert about it.
  • We had to include JSA when my hubby was made redundant

You can give them an estimate. Mine is estimated at the moment from a summer renewal. I have to supply exact figures by January -and if I don't payment will stop then

    MSE Florida wedding .....no problem
  • They were aware OH was on JSA for the period from April - August, we didn't receive WTC, just CTC. They said they didn't need to include the JSA total in the annual income total, they just needed an amount from August 08 - April 09 for OH work. Hmmm...not sure!?!

Hope the fact that we over-estimated pay for the last tax year doesn't end up being a problem.
  • You dont include Income Based JSA as income to TCO. They only include Contributions Based JSA as a taxable benefit.

Contact your local tax office (or offices if you travelled a lot) in order to get a copy of income and tax details for the 07/08 tax year. Make sure to get the details of all jobs. Once you have all of these details you should call TCO with the correct details. Make sure to give this information before the 31st January 2009. If you have over estimated your income you may actually be getting underpaid! Once your details are sorted your payments will be adjusted.

Thanks ever so much for your help, I will get OH to ring tax office later to see if we can get this sorted. x
