Chance of being able to rent house?

Hi

I live with my parent in a 2 bedroom house which is privately owned.
The house next door is owned by a Housing Association and has had several tenants over the years.
The current tenant and children caused neighbours on both sides of them which are privately owned houses lots of distress and suffering with loud muisc noise and anti-social behaviour.
They have left and the house is now empty.
Previously the property was rented by a family of 4. They split up and the mother left the house after inheriting one.
Her daughter who had lived their many years ago applied for the tenancy and was given it although she had no children.

My question is this:
I want to rent the house from the Housing Association.
This would give me a foot in the housing market and ensure that no other anti-social tenant is put into the house.
I have no children and it is a 2 bedroom house.
However in my defence I have lived in the street for over 30 years and am happy there and consider it my home. I also have a parent who lives far away and is old and ill and needs weekly attention and help from me.
On the basis of the above and the fact that the Housing Association allowed a single girl to rent the property what chance would I have? and also what would be the best way for me to approach the Housing Association for them to look favourably on my application?
Any useful help would be much appreciated.

p.s. I would say that my ill parent needs me and it's easier for them to stay with me for a couple of nights a week than me go to see them where they have no spare bedroom.......if this would help my case?

    Sorry to say this but I doubt you will be able to get in there. The HA must follow a strict vetting and allocation procedure dependent on need basis.
    A retired senior partner, in own agency, with 40 years experience in property sales & new build. In latter part of career specialising in commercial - mostly business sales.
  • I don't want to sound mean but as you're a single girl, who already has a perfectly good home, giving you a 2 bedroom house would be waste of HA resources.
    The only thing worse than smug married couple; lots of smug married couples.

    I don't have a home I am lodging with a parent.

    As I have stated they let the house off to a single girl before so why not me? she wasn't needy.

    Well you have a home just not a house.

    You don't know the full circumstances regarding this other girl so it's impossible to make a judgement.

    It depends on where you live. Where is that and what is the housing association? Maybe someone local can post and let you know. If you don't want to say where then maybe look at the council policy on points and whether there are any non-points based schemes.

    Some parts of the country have surplus HA stock.... not many but Sunderland I think has a more liberal policy for example.

    How does renting a house from this HA give you "a foot in the housing market"?

    Housing Associations are there to offer homes for those who don't have access to other types of housing. You currently have a home so why do you feel it would be okay for you to take on a tenancy at a property that could provide a home for someone with a family who may be currently be stuck in a B&B?

    If you have a problem with noise from the tenants next door, your best route is to take it up with the HA ,the Council's EHO,and your local councillors.
  • I'd say no chance. As a single person with no children, the chances of getting social housing are virtually nil.

    You do have a home, surely?

    The daughter may have inherited the tenancy rather than getting it from scratch.

    Why not ring the HA and ask them what their policies are?
