TV - crackling speakers

I have a 32" TV which is about 6 years old. It is a CRT and not a LCD or plasma. Had a clean up and moved the tv and stand to hover behind it. Used mr sheen on a rag to wipe the tv down so am sure no spray went inside. Now when i put the TV on the sound is fine. Sometimes it crackles and makes a whistling sound like using a microphone on a windy day. Then after a bit it goes away the the normal sound returns. Could be a fault like a dry joint on the sound board etc and knowing that some repaires charge at least £80 to check it out i have decided to try something else. It is a TV with built in surround speakers etc and have phono sockets in the back for additional speakers. In the menu option there is the option to turn off the TV internal speakers.
What i plan to do i buy a surround speakers that can connect to the TV directly. Correct route to take? Any recommendations of what type of speakers to buy?
Also noticed in the back there are two DIN plugs and a 18v power output.
Thanks in advance to those who replied.

First thing you'll probably want to check before spending money on speakers is that the fault is on the output stage for the internal speakers, or you may find that the interference is present on the phono outputs as well.
The easiest/cheapest way would probably be to borrow some PC speakers and use it with those for long enough to be sure the external outputs aren't affected.0 -
Have linked my hi-fi system to the tv using phono plugs and it seems to work okay playing through the hi-fi system. Was told that if i had accidently sprayed inside the slots the silicone? in the spray could short a circuit or two. Is that true? The TV picture is perfect. Is there a spray one can use to clean the boards? Was toying with the idea of removing the cover and check clean the ciruit boards.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems

Might be the slider switch at the rear to turn off the internal speakers that needs "waggling" a bit, silicon spray has not entered the set. Might be the speaker connections also...0
