There are some, but you would think what they eat would depend on what part of the world is associated with them eg Pakistani muslims would eat different food than Egyptian muslims. Same as Xmas really , not everyone has turkey.0 -
Didn't think of that ! OH is Pakistani Muslim. Just want to make some nice food for the occasion!0

DD1's BF is on her first fasting this year. All she talks about is how much she looks forward to her dates each evening! Asked my friend if she feels same way, and she said it's the one thing that she thinks about all day!
So I'd make something sweet and sticky with dates!I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

As with any feast we may have to celebrate (or commiserate) it's nice to cook something that gives pleasure - perhaps BF has a special favourite you could learn? Can you ask his Mum - she might be the very person to teach you how to cook it too!0

i have sent you a pm which i hope can help!
good luck:T Thanks to all lovely MSE'rs - you are great friends :T0 -
Well for Eid we normally have roast chicken, yorkshire puds, mashed pots, vegetables etc etc (xmas dinner by another name).
Why not just cook your best meal? Your guests might enjoy the change, the novelty of traditional British food and good food (as it is your best dish).0 -
It does seem to be particular to the area and family - as Zziggi says cook whatever you think you do best and you are comfortable with.
One of friends tears her hair out every year doing a Biriani which seems to use all the pans in her house (and she is a very good cook) and her mother still isn't satisifed. Other things which seem a lot easier include lettuce pakoras and various samosas - over the years I've got a lot better at folding but still need a lesson before starting every year!0 -
Sorry to gatecrash this thread
- don't know who else to ask
.
Can you advise me if it is ok (or usual) to give gifts at Eid?
We have some new neighbours close by who are a lovely family - I think they are muslims - will check (casually) when I get the chance. If it is appropriate i would like to get them something small (£5-£10) for Eid.
Is there something traditional I could get?
thanks in advance...

joanie
its perfectly acceptable
if you get chocs/sweets/food - make sure they are suitable for muslims or vegetarians
never really heard of anything traditional, we always give the kids money to treat themselves when we visit friends on eid ( just a few pounds each)

Hi
At Eid, after the Eid prayers, we start the morning with some seviyan - basically very thin vermicelli/angelhair type noodles which are lightly browned in a pan with some butter &/or oil then add milk and cook until absorbed by the noodles and thickened, then add sugar to taste. The amount of milk is quite a lot - I put about a handful of noodles in and then about a pint of milk to start and just top it up until is the thickness you want. We have them warm and plain but can add green cardamom seeds and sultanas and leave to cool and set. Top with some flaked almonds for a pudding.
We sometimes have rice and meat pulao/biryani type of meal or a roast chicken with yorkies dinner at Eid - whatever I fancy cooking really!
If a lot of people then I would probably go for spicy roast chicken pieces as can just marinade overnight and bung in oven. I would also make a gravy/sauced curry (meat or veg) and a meat or chicken pulao - make the stock the night before and on the day just brown onion and spices add meat from stock, brown and add stock, bring to boil and add presoaked, drained rice and cook - will only take about half an hour tops if you have done the prep before! With some pakoras or samosas for starters and salads (simple ones) and a couple of desserts (ice cream with fruit salad and maybe cold seviyan dish) and everyone will be stuffed! Best to make most of it beforehand so not too much to do on the day.
I have Lalita Ahmed's cook book which are very similar to the way we cook and her biryani recipe is very good and easy. I can try to paraphrase to avoid copyright issues if you want - but won't be able to until wed at the earliest.
Hope is of help!
Cheers!0
