Well using NTL you are not able to have any calls routed at the exchange automatically.

However, on BT, you can have numerous providers route the calls at the exchange. This is known as CPS (Carrier Pre-Selection). I don't think it's possible to have two providers use CPS as only one will take control of all outgoing calls unless a prefix (or other number) is used.

Read this MSE article on the cheapest call providers.

For BT customers it is best to use Primus Talk 2 from Planet Talk for free evening & weekend calls without a monthly fee. For daytime calls use Call1899 at 3p per call but you will have to use a prefix of 1899 for this.

If you don't want to use a prefix then you could get yourself an Orchid Dialler that will route calls depending on type of call and time of day automatically. See this thread for more info.

If you make a lot of calls (inc some at daytime) and don't want to use an Orchid Dialler or a prefix then you could choose an all inclusive plan from the likes of Tele2 for £7.99.

Didn't I read somewhere on here of some cable landline users with OneTel CPS?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • No you cant have your calls on cable cps to Onetel, but they will provide cable customers with a smartbox (Phonepal) which effectively does same thing, enabling you to use their plans on cable.

Can I add that OneTel's PhonePal works by dialling a freephone number first. Very similar to that of call1899, etc.

Only BT and Kingston Communications customers in Hull are able to use CPS where calls are automatically re-routed by the exchange unless a prefix override is used. Although most other carriers like OneTel, TalkTalk, Primus Talk, etc will only deal with BT customers though as they are under no obligation to deal with Kingston Communications customers.
