Bathroom Quote B&Q SE London

Hi All,
We have been quoted the following from B&Q:
We have a small downstairs bathrooom in need of a refurb.
The room measures (in new money) 2720mm by 1580mm.
We have been quoted approx £2000 for the materials we need from them. (New bath, shower, tiles, basin, toilet, basin unit, shower pump, radiator) We do not have any issues with this part of the quote. But......
We need them to remove approx 8 metres squared of tiles and then tile the entire room (approx 30 metres squared) we also need them to remove and dispose the existing suite. We will probably need some additional plumbing work as we are replacing an electric shower with a therma mixer one. All parts of the new suite will be positioned in the same place as the ones they are replacing. They may also need to put down some new floorboards as we have had a leaky pipe under the bath.
They have quoted us £3949.28 for the fitting. However this could change (probably upwards!!) as we have paid our £50 for an onsite survey to get a more accurate and final quote. £4K seems very high to me but then again I am tight. They believe the job will take around a week.
I have no local builder contacts so am happy to pay a premium for a B&Q fit as oppose to take a risk with an unknown tradesman but 6k for a new bathroom of our size does seem a lot. Happy to answer any questions if you have them. Is this quote fair?
Thanks in advance.

Good afternoon: You will pay a premium because of your location i.e. London. You should get quotes from independents who should be able to quote lower than B&Q. If you visit the CIPHE website you could find a plumber in your area although personal recommendation is the preferred route. The gear from B&Q isn't always the best quality or price tbh. Shame you had to pay £50 for an 'onsite survey'...most plumbers, my OH included, will do one for free.

...to all the replies so far. I guess I will head to the yellow pages. That said, if anyone can recomend a fully qualified quality installer happy to fit a bathroom in November in the SE London/NW Kent area for a much better price feel free to get in touch!!0

I agree, Independent bathroom fitters/plumbers etc, dont like fitting B&Q, and Wickes bathroom suites.
Also, the price you were quoted is far too much, if you get a chance, read through other posts, where posters have had quotes for fitting, bathrooms and kitchens, from MFI, and B&Q and they always seem to be the most expensive.
If you go down the yellow pages/thompson local route, you will find genuine trades as well as the cowboys, try and get a few quotes, and ask for references, or testimonials of thier previous work.0 -
We went to a couple of independent bathroom suppliers... and B&Q as an after thought as we were passing. One of the bathroom suppliers recommended two fitters who they had good feedback about (we asked them for suggestions) and we got quotes from both. The supplies from the locals supplier were slightly more expensive but literally only about 10% and we got all branded sanitary ware and taps etc The quote from the local fitter we used was about 1/3 of that from B&Q!!0

Hi Charltonboy1978,
I use a bathroom fitter local to you, i'm based in southeast London. He has done 2 bathrooms for me, supplied goods (alot cheaper and better quality than B&Q) and done all the plumbing and tiling. If you want he's details PM me. Even if you get a quote from him, it can't hurt.
Thanks

That is way too much.
You can also try www.myworkman.com to find a workman of any kind - you post your job and workmen get in touch to offer to come and quote. People also write recommendations and reviews on there so it can help if you can;t get a word of mouth one.
I've used it a few times and it's been OK.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

To update from my post - we have accepted a quote from a highly recommended builder of just under 4k for materials and fitting for our bathroom including moving the toilet and waste, tiling with natural stone on floor and walls, posh fittings, so 4k just to fit sounds way too high (although we did have a quote of 6k as well). DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
