I bought an Acer Aspire 7720G laptop with the Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 processor, 3GB RAM 250GB HD and windows vista home premium installed, last week of Auguest and experienced a strange problem on both it and its two replacements.
all three of them would not boot up first time after being left off over night or for an extended period of time (2-3hours). The LEDs for the battery and the power button would all light up, and i could hear that it was on, but the screen would just remain blank and the keyboard and mouse would not respond, and also it goes upto Acer screen where it says "press f2 to go to setup" and would not go beyond there. The only solution was to hold down the power button until it turned off and then turn it on again at which point it would start normally.
I shut both down via the start button and let it close fully on its own. There were no other unusal occurrences and when the thing was on it would work just fine. After this I can shut down and start up, restart with no problems unless I leave it shut down for long time.
Ruled out a virus as i didn't even hook up the second and third laptop to the internet and there was only one common programme i installed.
Doing a google search i came up with a forum which says it is due to BIOS and updating Bios will cure the problem. The problem I got is that I can not update bios as it come up with an error message asking to close all programmes and do the update as an administrator. I can confirm that there is no programmes running and my user account is an administrator account.
the other option is to do this is under PURE DOS mode which I don't know how to get to. I haven't got a floppy drive and can not make a ms dos startup disk using a already formatted usb stick as the option is greyed out.
I can not find a way to make a boot cd with windows.
I quite like the laptop and I got it for about £130 cheaper than the current market value so I would really like to keep this.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Thank you very much
