McAfee personal Firewall using 99% cpu

McAfee personal Firewall (as suplied by AOL) using 99% cpu for about 15 mins when PC is first switched on.

This has only been happening since I installed AVAST.

Any suggestions of what settings I can check or are they going to be incompatible ?

That's because it and Avast are both rubbish.

Uninstall them both. Use Windows Firewall and NOD32.
  • Wouldn't recommend windows firewall either - have a look at kerio and nod 32 is good for antivirus.

Haven't got Avast, but McAfee has been on my system since new. System resources with this and Word open are currently running at an average of about 12%.

    Seems OK to me.
  • AVG and ZoneAlarm are 2 other great free alternatives.
Win XP Frewall I don't like as it only monitors inbound traffic not outgoing.

Try uninstalling it then coming back and honestly saying there's no speed difference.

No thanks. What I have works for me and what I reported was accurate. There might be a speed difference with what you suggest, but is that such a big deal? I drive a Nissan, not a Porsche, so I think you can see where I'm coming from.

Thanks. I'll look at alternatives then.

I was quite happy with AVG 7.5 for time being, but that seemed to break itself. So decided to try Avast as read on here problems with avg 8 and heavy on resources.
