portable dvd player help?

I need some info/help a friend of mine picked up a goodmans dvd portable player from a bootsale and took it from sellers words that it was in working order,but when they got home it switched on ok,screen came on but when a disc is entered it comes up on the screen wrong disc or no disc etc.Now i was wondering why this was,can it be fixed would the lens need a clean,would it be broken and would it need fixed?Item was cheap and looking at it looks like new and he is wondering if its worth getting fixed and was wondering what kind of cost it would be to get right.

It may be that it is the wrong region coding,
i.e only discs from the states or Asia will work..

And if this was the case how would he get it back to uk again,i was thinking this maybe the problem and ask him to try and see.

try a vcd as it prob wont have any region codeing

I have tried a region 1 dvd and also music cd etc and still no luck still comes up with message no disc or wrong disc so i think it maybe the lens part of it not working as it plays nothing but everything else is ok with it as in it has a screen working and also charges battery,so what could be the problem and is it worth fixing?would it be expensive to fix or not worth fixing?

i'm interested in this thread as i have also a goodmans portable DVD and it comes sometimes with that message... at the moment we can't really watch DVDs as it seems to search for the disk and "Loading' comes up on screen but nothing else... this worked ok at the beginning (few months ago)... and i also wants to know if it would be worth repairing...i phone currys but a standard repair (when out of guarantee) is about 55pounds +part and that's too much for what it is...
