Its Disgusting! makes me so mad that people do not have anything better to do then pick and pull at peoples posts/threads,

Jeez i mean get your heads from out of your ar*es

The point people are making (however bluntly) is that teachers/teaching assistants SHOULD be able to spell. I couldn't teach someone to drive if I didn't know how to myself so why should a teacher be able to teach a child English if they haven't grasped the basics of spelling and grammar?

As I have already stated, I personally would NOT want my children being 'educated' by someone who couldn't spell. That said, I also suggested that perhaps the OP WON'T be in a teaching capacity – she may just be keeping kids in line, preparing things for classes or keeping kids occupied while the teacher works on a one-to-one basis with another child. Who knows? But I don't think expecting a teacher to be able to spell is asking too much!

If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.

Yes so being able to read stories at Home time or (quiet time), Arranging the days activities such as blocks, puzzles, putting out paper and pens etc doesn’t mean she needs to be a perfect speller

Yes I would not want a teacher who couldn’t spell correctly teaching my DD’s but Teaching assistants are what they advertise ‘assistants’ assisting the teacher and helping to prepare tasks?

I think you are wrong. My SiL is a TA and she regularly takes the class for lessons on her own, so there must be many more like her.

I'm not sure. I shall have to ask her about it next time I see her. I know she's studying to become a teacher, but that's a recent thing.

But if a PE teacher (see my previous post) with mediocre written English skills can sidestep to teach literacy, just how fussy are schools about this sort of thing?

Some debate about the role of TAs here and here.

Getting more experience as a TA won't make them better spellers!

No, but you said it didn't matter for listening to reading etc and then agreed that more experienced TAs might actually "teach" whole groups.

Unless someone who's a TA improves their standard of English whilst they're getting more experience, you'll have people with poor literacy levels teaching whole groups of primary pupils, which I'm sure you'd agree would be a bad thing!

Just feel relief that he or she is just an assistant. There are plenty of teachers who are similarly differently abled. Nasty elitists with our anti-one-legged-Tarzans prejudices.
