Accommodation in Toronto Area

Off to see Canada/Ontario next April with wife and 2 adult sons, does anyone have any ideas for inexpensive accommodation when travelling around this area. I want to travel around towns within 200 miles of Toronto. Any help will be much appreciated.

    Hi Terry,
    I have just booked this

    http://www.staystudio6.com/reservations/motel_detail.asp?MotelId=1908&NOA=&aYr=&aMo=&aDa=&dYr=&dMo=&dDa=&BTR=S6ProximityResults.aspx?searchtype=AD&CP=&TA=&redi=

very reasonable and self catering. We are going in May. You also don't need to pay until you get there as long as you secure with credit card and can cancel up to the day before.

    Who are you flying with?
    I haven't got one!
  • Which towns are you planning to go to?

My other half and I went with our two children in the summer (see my pics if you want). With the children we went for suites for the most part -

We were there for 2 weeks and spent circa £1000 on accomodation.

In Toronto - Town Inn Suites (cheap and a bit tatty now, but managed to get some free breakfasts etc from them). In a slightly better location was the Delta hotel and I believe that is also a cheap hotel in Toronto.
In Niagara Falls - Sheraton on the Falls This was where we spent the real money (same price for 2 nights here as we paid for 5 nights in Toronto - but a brilliant hotel - we had a falls view. Behind the hotel (if you aren't bothered about the view) the Skyline Inn was cheap and looked ok. The Niagara falls town itself is a bit like a tidier Blackpool but with an amazing set of falls...
Then we headed up the side of lake Ontario and stayed at a Travellodge in the 1000 lakes area (Beautiful Area!), which was ok, like most travel lodges, but lots of separate 'private villas' (or sheds as my 6 year old daughter named them).
Next Up Montreal - an interesting city (though more 'french' than I expected and probably better time for adults than children!), we stayed at the Holiday Inn express centreville and it was one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in - Fantastic Suite, very well priced, good location (we paid $118CAD per night in August for a very large suite and they did a good free breakfast too)
Then Ottawa - our favourite city visited on the trip, we stayed at the Cartier Place Suite Hotel which was a bargain ($89CAD!), reasonable location (10 mins walk to main shops/parliament etc), but breakfast isn't too worth paying for - its run by the attached restaurant who seem very mean (and apparently are a different company to the hotel and are a good italian for evening meals)!
We ended our trip in Peterborough which was a smaller place - we stayed in the Best Western Ontonbee Inn, which was good, quiet and with a brilliant view...

Anyway not sure if some of the cities were a bit far for you, but I found Canada quiet to drive in and not hard work so the distance was easier to cover, I printed travel details from Mapquest before hand (though changed the route while we were there easily enough).
(even in Toronto where a Taxi driver told me it was as hard as driving in New York - it wasn't, I've driven through New York and Toronto was much easier - less traffic than lots of british cities I thought!)

And as a taster for you (this was the hotel room view)

    lovely photo.
We are planning on doing all the Toronto Area thing as we think 2 weeks will be taken up with that although we wouldn't miss Niagara.
The studio6 is much cheaper and will cost circa £400 for the whole 2 weeks so I suppose it just depends on what you want.
Don't forget you can claim the canadian tax back on the accomodation when you get home, just keep all your receipts
