This one is also fairly common with people who have more than one ISP. In this case the sender is attempting to send mail via the "contactbox" SMTP server, but was sending it as if he was a Freeserve customer.
While most reputable UK ISP's allow you retrieve email from their POP3 servers when dialled-in via another ISP most refuse to act as relays. You should be using the SMTP server of the ISP you are dialled in to for sending email.

Hi Mr Skint (or anyone else)

Excuse me if this question is naive - I don't even have a laptop yet, let alone roaming wi-fi access ...

but presumably the same thing would apply in a wi-fi zone - is it necessary to find out the relay server names in such cases?

or maybe most people do webmail when away ...

No because you are still connected to one ISP. All roaming WIFI does is pass you from one hotspot to the next - you're still connected to one service provider. Just like a mobile phone transfers you from mast to mast as you move around.

  • thanks I,ve sorted it

one of the emails I was trying to send must have been stuck, because I have just deleted it and now the others have 'sent'

    thanks anyway
