Annoying E.ON

I have recently switched to E.ON and a couple of things have already annoyed me. Firstly, they said they were going to take my first direct debit at the end of September but they took it a few days after the switch at the end of August. Secondly, I have just got my final statement from Southern Electric but the readings are substantially greater than they should be. I rang Southern Electric and they told me they got the readings from E.ON. They agreed to cancel the direct debit which I am going to check online next week. I gave the correct readings at the switchover time to E.ON so I couldn't understand it.

So I rang E.ON and they said there was an error when inputting the figures so they put in their own ones. They said they would send a disputed readings notice to Southern Electric with the figures I had originally given them and they said it would take about six weeks to implement. I just wonder what is actually going to happen because I had to repeat the readings several times before it registered with the girl I was speaking to.

I phoned back Southern Electric to let them know and they said the correction should take 2 or 3 days - 6 weeks is unlikely. This is all the more annoying because Southern Electric should be giving me a refund as I was in credit.

Are E.ON incompetent or is this deliberate? What do you think?

Afraid I had the same problems with them- plus a few more too! Thankfully I changed supplier from them (they were the supplier to my new property when I moved in) pretty quickly, and have just had a cheque back from them too... They insisted on charging me £40 a month for electricity only in a one bed flat, one occupant. 3 direct debits later, I have just received a cheque back for a £90 credit leaving balance from them!
An unbelievable company if you ask me!

  • This is useful to know, am in the process of changing to E.On. Wonder how it will all work out. Have e-mailed them with the meter readings, so we'll see, and I have it in writing.

Anyway, my £55 Quidco cashback was paid into my account on Thursday, so things seem to be going well - touch wood!

  • Final/opening meter reads are agreed with the meter reading firm and the supplier before thet are used to start an account. Errors can come from this process sometimes
  • It depends when you gave the readings. Opening readings need to be taken within 5 days of the supply start date, if they are not taken from the customer. The meter reading agency sends an estimated reading based on previous figures to use by both suppliers.

Sometimes readings get inputted incorrectly, which are then not validated by the meter reading agency, and thus they send an estimate.

Sometimes the meter reading agency does not receive the readings from the customer due to system error (rarely) thus an estimated reading is received.

In these cases, disputes can be raised to correct the readings. So the correct readings are resent to the 3rd party, and the other supplier to be agreed. Process can take 6 weeks, depending on whether the initial reading is agreed by both parties, but can be sorted within a couple of days. It all depends on system speed, how accurate the readings are and if there are any problems with billing from the new readings.

It will get sorted though, and it could happen with any supplier if you switch to them, not just E.On
