I agree Ikea don't generally sell very good quality pieces of furniture but I have to disagree with you about the beds, Tim. Our bed hasn't broken despite being jumped up and down on regularly by two children

I'm going by the numerous posts on MSE that say that their Ikea bed collapsed. I've never had one myself, but I have loked at them. To be honest there is a mixture of what looks like good quality solid beds, and those that would collapse the first time anyone err....got carried away in them.;)

the mattresses we've got are very good quality. In ten years my husband and I have had to buy five beds, the Ikea one was the cheapest and has lasted the longest. We had two beds from Argos that were completely rubbish (one I just sent back it was so bad, the other broke) and the other two we bought from independent furniture shops (and paid a lot of money for them) and they were also terrible.

One thing I do know about is beds and mattresses, and I can tell you that Ikeas mattresses are terrible quality. However it does appear that the firmness suits you and your hubby. All I can say about the Argos beds is that at Argos nothing is cheap unless it is reduced to clear. And many items are actually expensive. So it may have appeard that you were buying an expensive mattress when you weren't.

Out of interest, what make were the other two?

I'm currently looking for recommendations on where to buy a double bed

Tim Deegan, where would you recommend?

Sorry, due to forum rules I come on here to give general advice, but I am not allowed to give any advice in the forums that I could gain from.
  • You might want to try a Divan Bed.... as far as mattresses go... probably Pocket Sprung or Memory Foam best options, unless you have any specific back or sleeping problems.

I recently bought a pocketsprung bed from
    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Bed-Market
and think I got a very good deal on a KozeeSleep bed, the mattresses are better than any previous one I have had!!

My only advice is to buy your beds from somewhere where you can actually lay on the bed and feel how comfortable it is... a bit tricky in ARGOS .

But, naughty I know, maybe you could go to a bed store to find a make and model you find comfortable and then try to find it on the internet.

The bed we bought was so comfortable I could have fallen asleep in the shop! My husband and I tried out every bed in the shop before we settled on our latex topped one. Not sure of make - husband still asleep on it - but it was £550 for a king size and is guarrenteed for (I think) 10 years.

If you do this then make sure whoever you do buy it from will take it back if you don't like it. Trying them out in a shop is a good guide, but it doesn't tell you what it is like to sleep on for a few nights.
  • My last 2 beds have been Sealey divans and have been wonderful. You need to try a bed out in a shop. Don't be shy, just kick off your shoes and lay their for a few minutes!

I also believe in buying the best bed you can afford. Not very MSE probably.

Please do a forum search on Sealy first.

What would be the point? I bought my bed long before I joined this forum!

I presume others have had problems with Sealy but my own experience of the brand is good.

It was targeted more at people who are reading your advice. I understand that you already have one.
