New Car At Dealer Cost

I test drove a new car recently. I decided that I liked the model and want to buy one but don't want to buy a new one. The salesman has now contacted me by post stating that he needs a certain number of new car registrations by the end of the month to meet his target and is prepared to sell it to me at dealer cost - as I understand it this is what it costs them to buy in.
I have always said I would never buy a new car due to the high initial depreciation. However, is this a deal worth having? Or should I just wait for a decent second hand one to come along? And why would they sell it to me at no profit to them anyway?

I very much doubt you will actually buy it at cost to the dealer - he'll merely be giving you a bit more discount than they usually would. The trade is very slow at the moment so see what he'll offer you then compare it with what the cost would be if you bought it through an internet broker - i bet it won't be as much discount as they will give you.0

And to give you an idea of just how slow things are at the moment, I recently bagged myself a brand new Nissan Primera for the same price as a base model Fiesta -- £8000 -- from an internet broker. A very nice car with electric toys coming out of its ears for second-hand money. I've calculated I can run this brand new car for three years and it'll only cost me a grand a year (private sale £5000 easily after three years). Indeed it'll barely cost me any more to run (maybe £1000 but that's it) than the 5-year-old Hyundai Accent that I'm passing on within the family, once you've factored in MOT/likely repair costs etc.
And -- by the time you come to sell the market is likely to be more bouyant. But you need to get a *substantial* saving -- a similar car to mine from a main dealer would have cost me around £16000 list.0 -
Can you recommend any internet dealers? I am looking at a new Panda 4x4.0

or have a look at the best deal list over at HJ's forum.0 -
https://www.honestjohn.co.uk is a good place to start.
For reference, having a very quick look around I saw a Panda 4x4 for £7790. Not sure if this is any good or not to be honest, doesn't seem like much of a saving to me but still.
