Help please with Netgear Switch

Hi, I reall havent got a clue here !! ok, i bought a netgear switch. I have a computer downstairs with a router. Upstairs in eldest sons bedroom he has a computer with wireless adapter, no problems there. In other sons bedroom we have a xbox 360, nintendo wii and a computer. We have a long ethernet cable running from router downstairs up into this room. I bought the netgear switch connected the xbox and wii and both are running great. My question is, how do i connect his computer to the internet? Tried just plugging ethernet cable in and nothing happens, tried running router disc and it comes up something like cant connect to router. please help. Thankyou.

Which switch is it you have, have you tried different ports in the back of the switch ?

Also, make sure you are using the correct network connection, go to Control Panel and select Network connections, right click on your LAN connection then go to the General tab and select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on the properties button...make sure that "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" is ticked and "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically"

You might also want to disable any firewalls you have to see if that's what's blocking the connection too
  • Hi, thanks for you reply. Its a Netgear 5-port fast ethernet switch. FS605. ok so I went to control panel, slected network connections but there is nothing there, no LAN connection.
  • Have I connected everything right. The long ethernet cable from downstairs I have plugged into the switch. Then I bought 3 cables, 1 connected to xbox, 1 connected to wii and 1 connected to computer, I plugged all of these into the switch also.

tried making sure that the network card is enabled?

(in vista, start > network > network & sharing center > manage network connections > enable the LAN card )

Start > Control Panel - Network Connections (classic view) then your connections should be shown in clour (enable) or grayed out (disabled)

  • The WII has a built in Wireless connection, no need to hard wire that.

Make sure you have connected the cat 5 cable to the network card and not the modem. Also some boards come with two network ports, make sure you are using the enabled one, or that the one your using is enabled. Also you might not have the drivers installed for it (if its an onboard NIC you should have the drivers on the Motherboard CD).

  • Why not put a wireless adapter in the pc like the one in the other bedroom pc?

The problem is, you have bought a switch - not a router.

yes - but the connection should still show up to the switch even if not to the internet
