Have they put up the number of units on the higher tariff

I am in the process of looking for a new provider. I have used the energy switch web sites and have been comparing the kWh and the units at each tariff.
Have the energy companies also increased the number of units you have to use on the higher (primary) tariff, before you get onto the lower (secondary) tariff as well as raising the kWh prices to get more money?

I noted that Scottish Power are offering a "Fix For Free" tariff to Apr 09 for existing customers. The tariffs are

Gas: Primary - 1143 @ 4.729 per 1/4
remainder @ 3.811
Although the prices are considerably lower than the best EDF can offer on Energy Help Line, the number of units you have to use to get onto the lower band for Gas is considerabley higher. The saving is £40 approx for me to Apr 09.

EDF Price Protection to 31 Oct 09 - 670 @ 7.718
Thereafter @ 3.368.

Sneaky or what.

The amount of primary units can and does vary between suppliers, the 1143 or 4572 per annum is quite common, but as you have found out, to compensate they charge different prices for the kwh.
I may have missed something but the two cases you quote work out to almost the same cost:
    Scott Power 1143 x 4.729 = £54.05
    EDF 670 x 7.718 = £51.71

So only a couple of £ per qtr difference? Then as EDF follow on prices are lower surely EDF would be cheaper for you.
  • The maths as I saw it to compare was:
    EDF
    670 @ 7.718 = £51.70
    473 @ 3.368 = £15.94
    1143 per 1/4 = £67.64

    SP
    1143 @ 4.729 = ££54.05

My old price was a lower consumption on the primary tariff and a lower price. Double whammy on the increase.

    Sneaks.
