DSG Coverplan rocks!

As this site has saved me loads of money, here's something back. Hope it's not a dupe.

I bought a new 32" widescreen LCD TV from Dixons. Unbelievably it was a bargain - 150 quid cheaper than anywhere online (£570 for a LG RZ32LZ50). As i'm a bit savvy I agreed to take the crappy Coverplan, knowing that I could cancel it in 45 days, just so the salesman would give me 30 quid off and get his commission. All good.

I phoned a week later to cancel it. As i'd bought it on the 9 months interest free thing, I was surprised to find a cheque for £159 in the post today rather than just a reduction in the credit amount. Apparently, because they can't change the interest free agreement they simply send a cheque for the value of the coverplan. I bought the 3 year one, but wish I had got the 5 year - essentially I can cash the cheque, earn interest on it, then pay it back in 9 months for free. Marvellous :D

Anyways its just a heads up - if you're buying a major purchase from DSG then use the Coverplan purchase as a lever to get a discount, make sure you use the interest free offer (it actually goes through HFC bank I think), then keep the interest for 9 months.

Thanks for the tips by the way. I've saved a fortune on here :)

Just out of interest, what happens if you didn't pay it off after 9 months? Do you then have to pay interest on the full loan amount (£570 + £159) or is it just the remaining balance (£411).

It seems logical that you would pay interest on the full £729 loan amount, but am just interested ...

  • a couple of years a go i bought fridge freezer and microwave and took out the coverplan to get a discount.
When I (a week later) phoend to say I wanted to cancel the cover plan they told me I had to take it back to the store to cancel it. Which I did but it was a lot of hassle

    Maybe you got lucky!

I got told that, but after pointing out that it stated in the t&cs that I had to phone, and that I was 14 miles away from the store, they relented and did it all on the phone. Stick to yer guns!
  • its not supposed to work like that.
They are supposed to cancel the HFC credit agreement and then redo it
    hmmmz
    guess ya lucky!
