here is the dell basket containing PC discussed in this thread together with 5% discount applied. There is also a variation on the PC with Pentium4 2800 CPU, 48X CDrewriter and 15" TFT screen for only £145 more. Just delete the pc that is not appropriate for your needs.

warning. there is no modem included so you will need to adjust system specs to include one if needed.

THIS PC IS NO GOOD FOR PLAYING THE LATEST 3D GAMES. BUY SOMETHING ELSE IF THAT IS YOUR REQUIREMENT.

To upgrade the memory you will need to order one stick of this http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/MPartspecs.Asp?mtbpoid=43244615A5CA7304&WSMD=Dimension+2400+Series&WSPN=CT413810 for under £30.    It is very easy to fit so don't be scared!

  • Hi,if you have broadband you won't need the modem.
If you do the Dell v92 Data/Fax modem should do the job.

I have seen refs to it not being possible to use non Dell branded products for upgrades to the system. Could someone please explain to what parts this applies (i.e. could I fit a non Dell DVD writer ?) and what exactly is the problem. Is it that they make their boxes in such a way that the parts do not physically fit or is it some other compatibility issue ?

    Thanks for the help.

someone could confirm but this sounds wrong to me, it should work fine with any parts, only things that could really be incompatible are ram upgrades but its always been like that really, u just need to fine the right type.

Mostly these machines use standard parts, but there are some differences. The motherboards are a slightly different shape and the power input cable to the board has a non-standard pin input. So, you can't just change the mobo or the psu for a standard one.

There is room for an extra 3.5" hard drive, but you need a special bracket to hold it, which costs an arm and a leg.

On the plus side, the 5.25" drive slot is standard and the ide and drive power cables are standard. So fitting a DVD writer should be no problem at all.

Alternatively, this is the place to fit an extra HDD, as you can get 3.5 to 5.25 adapters from ebuyer for under 2 quid.

The PCI slots are standard, and there is no AGP slot.

Memory is easy to get from Crucial.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Just got my Purchase Order for the computer
  • you should be ok to fit non dell parts in them.  They often come with green plastic brackets inside the case (mine did) - but I can't 100% confirm this..and I have a pioneer DVD writer and another non DEll DVD drive in mine.

Best to use dell or a company like crucial (often cheaper!!) for the RAM  (one that lets you put the make and model of your PC and then shows you the compatable RAM for it)

    Hope this helps  ;D
