Could Malwarebytes help me with this?

Dell Dimension 2400 PC (circa 2004, yes it's ancient) running XP SP2, IE6. Adaware SE and Norton a'virus (as part of systemworks) was installed.

Usual malware infection symptoms, browsing overwhelmed by unwanted sites, running slow, etc.

Specific symptoms.
-XP auto-update switched off and unable to re-engage.
-Norton a'virus unable to engage auto-protect.
-System restore history gone or inaccessible replaced by point labelled "last good point" or something similar.
-Desktop icon for "internet security suite" which is opening windows pointing out infections and inviting subscription.
-Disconnecting internet causes "webpage unavailable while offline" warning box to appear regularly so malware is trying to access sites.

Also have tried new a'virus installation without success as installatiion failed to complete, seemed to stall. So many sites popping up I wonder if I will be able to complete a download.

Am I likely to be able to recover this? Or should I consider a fresh XP installation?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

you will not beable to install another antivirus untill you uninstall norton first.
personally i would not try to fix this if it's that bad,i would start agian from fresh, put theres no harm in trying to sort it out,
    download spy bot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
and it mite take some time by the look of it
when you have install and run it,
get avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html and unistall norton and install avast
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

Thanks for the heads up. Using McAfee on laptop is this any better? Or should I be looking at Avast, AVG or similar? Also got Norton 360 as part of software bundle but haven't installed as have heard it's heavy on resources.
