  • Category D just means it has been damaged beyond economical repair i.e. in the eyes of the insurer, it wasn't worth the money to repair it. Very often insurance companies quote for repairs using all new and genuine parts which can be very costly and as a resut an older car can be "written off" because of a cracked bumper!
The usual guideline is if the repairs are going to cost more than 80% of the current market value of the vehicle, it will be written off.
You should not have any trouble insuring it, however in the case of an accident, your insurer will be able to see from a national database that this car has previously been declared a category D write off, and it may be judged to have a lower market value as a result.
If however you can show receipts to prove that all the damage was repaired, this may not be a problem, I would just make sure you keep receipt and proof of everything you do to make it good incase the question ever arises.

Is the car ALREADY repaired, or is it to be a project & get it fixed yourselves???

If it's already done, you need a thorough list of EVERYTHING thats been replsaces & whether new or used components wer fitted. Pre repair photos would be good to have, too.

If the idea is to fix it after buying it, you'd need to know ALL the components were readily available - you don't want to be kept waiting for something for ....weeeks.... holding everything up.

& you'll need it thoroughly inspected, before you start & again after.

& how will you sell it on, later - it'll ALWAYS be recorded with https://www.hpi.co.uk as damaged cat D, whatever you do to it!!

    DON'T BOTHER WITH IT!!!

Find one that costs a bit more, but aint busted!!

... in the unlikely event of an accident where does he stand?
If the roof repair (has the car been rolled?) is anything less than perfect I doubt he'll be standing at all. Cat D is normally worth about 50% of book value in trade circles - don't get lured into paying more.
    Can I help?
