We had our house rewired last year. Quotes for a survey were in the region of £1000 which I thought was taking the pee so we just had it rewired instead, as it was on the brink and we were planning a massive extension as well.

Quotes for the rewire (3 bed detached) were up to £6k plus vat (mustn't forget the darned vat) but we had it done by a fine electrician for £3,500 in the end, including the inevitable extras we'd forgotten to include initially.

I would defnitely say get out for a week while it's being done, it's bound to save a fortune. And your sanity. It was like ground zero for the whole time. Luckily we had it done before we moved anything in as our house sale had fallen through (what a stroke of luck :D)
