Big ping problems

I've a few pcs configured in a TCP/IP fixed IP network.

One pc is not reponding.

It is picking up the network ok.
All pcs are showing up in "View workgroup computers"
In fact, I can actually access the hard disks of the other pcs and work away.
But if i try to ping one of the other nodes through this particular pc, it times me out.

A few further clues are

1) the coomand prompt ping is not even saying "pinging 192.168.10.14". It's saying "pinging $! (two ambiguous ascii characters)

2) I'm using a proxy server for all the nodes' internet & it's working fine for these nodes.

3) Can't get it to grab a webpage no matter what on this one pc.
Not in IExplorer, Firefox, Adaware updates or AVG updates
It just ignores the proxy server.
(I've even switched the firewall off on both the host proxy and the said machine - no difference)

4) it was running broadband as a standalone, but it was connecting in &, again, not fetching pages.

The problem child is an Xp home SP2 machine which very recently had virus & spyware problems. Now all are cleared but I feared they've scarred TCP/IP somehow.

I can't do a system restore because up until today, System restore was not switched on ! Neither was the firewall.

I can't do updates for AVG, Adaware & Windows patches because I can't get it to recognise an internet connection.

To sum up: Fixed ip's, working fine in windows, not so good in Dos, but no internet. This is NOT an internet explorer problem, this is a network communication problem.

Help.

what spyware or virus was on your pc?
what is the plural of moose?

    slags
  • This rings a bell! One of our PC's at work exhibited the strange ping response you described about a year ago. Further investigation showed that it was riddled with viruses (can't remember which ones as it was so long ago). After unsuccessfully attempting disinfection we ended up copying all key data files off then rebuilding it from the boot CD.

    Not much help I'm afraid.....
  • IMHO your TCP/IP stack is poked. Have you tried last known good? If yes, then go to device manager and remove your network card. Reboot. Add the network card again and reconfigure TCP/IP

    Good Luck and HTH
  • i'd agree with Herbert, but going in as 'last known good' will take you in as standard, as as the computer is aware the last boot was good. you can also get away with just removing TCP/IP, rebooting and reinstalling without actually having to bin the network card as well.
  • if the windows comms underlying component may be damaged as a result of the spyware/viruses. look at that site for how to repair it...

also scan the thing with stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ so its doesnt infect your other machines with what ever it has/had :)

    Cheers everyone for the responses.

To add insult to injury, (before I read these), I uninstalled the Voyager modem & attempted to reinstall, only to be told I couldn't, because my pc was a 33MHz Pentium 2, with 32 MByte RAM. and not suitable for broadband.
(It's actually a two month old Dell 5150)

Beforehand, it was connecting up ok, but not pulling anthing off the internet.
While connected, i executed the command prompt ip**** (can't remember the command) which was supposed to show up my online assigned DNS.
It came back with no DNS assigned.

I'm backing up at the moment, I'll do a Dell reinstall tomorrow.
I'll try the 'last know good config' first.

If this isn't an advert for keeping XP's System Restore ON, I'm Reg Dwight.

Again, folks, thanks for your comments, much obliged.
