Microsoft Office for free

Hi all,

Just to let you know that rather than shelling out for Microsoft Office for your new laptop or pc you might be able to get it for free if your parents/others already have it on their home computer.

When it is bought you can install it on up to 3 home computers. So just buy your laptop/pc before you go to uni and use your parents disc to install it.

Failing that you could always wait until you get to uni and see if anyone else has already bought it and use their copy (although it is meant to be 3 computers in the same household if you are living with other students then this is classed as your household).

Hope this helps someone.

Be careful of doing that as they do track the IP addy. I let someone install it on their pc, and after a while, the service was blocked to their and I had to phone Microsoft to get another license key, which was very difficult.

  • And if you're university is awesome they will be on the MSDN Student Alliance, which means you get it all for free anyway. Well...if you're on a computing course...I could have downloaded Vista, got myself a copy of XP for nowt for my Mac so I can download and run Visual Studio, also free
  • why not download open office?

the UI isnt quite as user friendly as microsft...well okay its not as flashy but is basically the same in all aspects and its entirely free. Only problem is the files cannot be loaded into microsoft word despite the fact it can load word documents. Pretty sure you can copy across the text into a word document though!

Also it comes with open office calculator and other stuff, basicaly all the tools office includes.

Office is not included with the MSDN Student Alliance as it is not considered a developer tool. You can get Access and OneNote from office though.

Hiya, i'd second that as have been using open office since i started uni having read about it on this site: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/free-office-software,

plus if you save the open office file as rich text format you can then still open it in microsoft - useful if your say working at home but printing at uni etc

Actually, people in a shared house/flat would have different IP addresses, even if they were connected through the same wireless network router.
