Nectar Card Fraud

Hopefully the right forum - there has been fraud on my Nectar Points account!!!
Did my Sainsbury's shopping today and noticed on the till receipt that my points total was considerably less than it had been the week before. I haven't redeemed any points for ages. Checked on the website when I got home and saw that there had been 2 redemptions, one on 24/08/08 for 3,500 points and the other for 9,000 on 02/09/08. That's £60, and characteristic of fraud - small transaction first and if that goes through OK go for a bigger one next time. Phoned Help Centre and had an almighty job convincing them that I hadn't paid for shopping with Nectar Points at the South Ruislip Sainsbury's Store - a place I've never been in my entire life. Seemingly the transactions were done with a Nectar keytag rather than a card. I had to point out that I'd been defrauded of £60, which was a crime in my view, and if it continued as it was likely to, I'd have no points left at all. This led to a referral upwards, and to cut the story short, my card can now be used to earn points but not spend them, pending issue of a new card with a new account number.
I got the impression this wasn't the first time it had happened, and that keytags were involved. There's obviously quite a chain involved in their manufacture and distribution and various opportunities for copying, stealing or making extra tags. My own tag has never been used or even taken out of the drawer I put it in when it arrived, so nobody's been able to copy that.
Moral of the story - if you've got a substantial points balance, it's worth keeping a close eye on the total. The account details on the website are very comprehensive and the Help Centre can pin transactions down even further.
Came as a surprise to me. I know credit and debit cards are vulnerable, but loyalty cards????
The greed of thieves knows no bounds.

  • Nectar cards have always been prime targets, you don't need any ID other than the card itself to use them as payment in Sainsburys*, I'd much prefer it if my card was 'collect' only. If you lose it, you have to move fast to cancel it in case it falls into the wrong hands.

*They don't work as payment in a Sainsburys that you haven't visited before (or not used within 12 months), you need to swipe it once to collect points, then within 48 hours it's available to use in that store.
  • Oh my thats really sad to hear. I know how hard it is to accumulate so much points and don't even get to use it. It happened to me about three years ago, but wasn't so much though as a result I wasn't that bothered.

So much dishonest people in the world. Thats one of the reason why I use my points as soon as it reaches a certain amount. Either for groceries or for one of the entertainment packages on the nectar website. They should at least send you a voucher or give back a certain amount of points, because its no fault of yours.

We managed to defraud nectar by accident!!

At XMas my mum used her nectar points to pay for her shopping. It wasn't the whole balance of them so when my cousin said he was popping out for some extra bits the next day, my mum gave him the card... However, the nectar points from the previous day hadn't been deducted and we ended up with -2000 points and just had to 'work them off' (nectar's words)

The whole 48 hr thing for points being deducted is silly and makes me think a monkey in a basement is typing them into a computer manually. How else would it take that long? lol

Blimey, Nectar sold you off into prostitution for 2000 points? I'm amazed the media hasn't been all over this!
  • Did my Sainsbury's shopping today and noticed on the till receipt that my points total was considerably less than it had been the week before.

And read carefully, the Nectar card number was not mine! Although the shopping receipt was mine. It was either the casher or the till machine fault. Anyone came across like this??

I don't normally check the balance of my Nectar statement to be honest. From now on, I will..........

I check my nectar balance regularly online, so I would know as soon as any fraud was committed... It's worth registering.

Could be the cashier using their own card if people forget to give theirs in to be swiped.

Just for the sake of £1 worth of points? hmmmmmm..........
Very tempt to go back there to investigate it....but drive there and back again will cost more than £5....have to wait next week shopping. I hope the customer service will not argue with me that I might use someone else Nectar card for shopping.

Just checked my online statement, the points with their petrol station have been credited, but not the grocery, so certainly something wrong......
