I have been trying to solve this problem fot the last hour with no success- any help. my father is hard of hearing and needs headphones to listen to his new Sony Bravia 26b P 30 XXY TV using headphones. Problem is my Mums hearing is OK, so want the headphones to just amplify the sound. They bought some Phillips SBC HC 8440 headphone that came with a jack that fitted into the TV, trouble is that when plugged in onle the sound comes through the headphones and no through the TV(and vice versa), Do I need to buy them more expensive head phones or can this potion of high sound in heaphones and low on Tv be achieved ??

As far as I know there isn't a setting to allow sound to be put through the speakers and the headphones at the same time. I think it is a fairly standard feature for the external sound to be muted when a headphone jack is detected. No headphones are going to allow you to do this, no matter how expensive they are.
A possible solution would be possible if you have a separate device such as a DVD Recorder or a VCR that has a headphone jack and is capable of receiving the channel you want . You could plug your headphones into it and then use your TV speakers as normal.
Or you could always turn the main volume up and buy your mum some earplugs...

You could buy a headphone jack splitter, than put one into the headphones and and the other into some more speakers.
Rather surprised you didn't check this out before you bought it though...0 -
If the TV has a phono out, you could buy a cheap hifi with a phono in. Once the two are connected, the sound should still come out of the television, and your father can plug his headphones into the hifi.0

Or vice versa - which should give your mum better quality sound, depending on the quality of the Hi-Fi speakersIf the TV has a phono out, you could buy a cheap hifi with a phono in. You could perhaps try connecting the headphones to a SCART, using something like:

or:

(though the pic on that one shows a 3.5mm plug rather than a socket for some reason)

looks like they sell a vast array of different connectors, I'd be tempted to give them a call and ask for some advice.Stompa0 -
If the TV has any sort of audio out, you'll be able to find a connector to fit it, I'd say.Super geek.0

Good idea, I hadn't thought about that.
Even a cheap hifi will probably sound better than the terrible speakers that seem to be in TVs nowadays.0 -

Indeed, in which case something like this might do the trick:

£50 seems a lot to pay just to listen to headphones. A cheap hifi at half the price would do the same job.0 -

True, I guess I was thinking that perhaps the remote control might make life easier (though quite why it needs a remote with so many buttons is beyond me!). Having said that I see that most amps these days seem to come with remotes anyway.Stompa0
