An alternative to MSN Messenger?

Can anyone suggest an alternative to using MSN Messenger? I would like instant email notifications for my non-hotmail email account.

I get notifications for 2 yahoo accounts, and a hotmail.

I use Trillian and its great as I'm on it with MSN, Yahoo, AIM and ICQ. However I do find sometimes it has problems connecting with one or more of the messanger services (mainly MSN).

Besides Trillian, there's also Miranda, Gaim and Pexit to consider. Trillian is - according to PCFormat - the best of the four, though Miranda is much smaller and does not require installation; handy if you like to take your software with you.
