Hi Jenny
I'm starting at Bristol UWE this month too - are you doing Nursing?
There is some financial support & advice available at UWE - see the link below:
http://www.uwesu.net/fx/articles.php?action=view&id=302
Also, if you get a student account then they usually have overdrafts available which will help. Plus Martin has some excellent guide's on student finances on this site which are worth a look.
I don't know if you are from Bristol already, but generally the buses are pretty good (depending on where you live) so you might find you don't need a car. Also, its a busy city so there should be lots of opportunities to get part time work if you need it.
Finally, if budgeting isn't something you find easy then it might be worth having a look in the budgeting forum on this site - they have lots of good hints & tips to help you!!
All the best & hope to see you later at Freshers week!

I just completed my social work degree, so understand reduced income and difficulty in getting part time job due to placements and having a baby.
If you manage to get a part time job you may be able to get tax credits as my nhs bursery was not classed as an income when I applied for tax credits.
try looking at student services if a note takers are needed, as I have dsylexia I was provided with one ( a fellow student was paid to do my notes )
Bring pack lunches, and own drinks as I found food at uni and near placemens expensive. Do you get funding for travel to your placements?
Good luck0 -
You should be entitled to the non-means tested part of the student loan - it's the extra means tested bit you can't get.
I get just over £3k this year from the SLC (£5k less than last year
), and am still waiting to hear what my DH (NHS) bursary amount will be...
You're only eligible for a loan if you're doing a degree. I assume that the OP is doing the (Advanced) Diploma which gets the higher bursary but no loan.0 -
I am doing an NHS funded course, which is a degree, and I get £375 a month for my bursary. Its a means tested bursary based on my income, im not a mature student, but I have been financially independant for over 3 years. I also get a non means tested loan of around £2000 for the year. I have rent to pay, which is £375pm. So my bursary covers my rent, and I just have to make do with the rest! Its hard, and although I am on a 'low income', I dont qualify for any help with energy costs etc, because im not on any benefits, or have any dependants. Its so annoying!0

If you're studying to be a nurse then i'd suggest using this site
www.studentnurse.org.uk
You'll find a lot of people in the same situation to talk to0
