Capping prior to house move

I love this website, and I've always found answers and tips on the forum before and found everyone to be really helpful with some really good advice, but this time I've had to regsiter and become part of the community as I can't find the answer to my question anywhere!
Basically, I am about to move into a new house in next few weeks, we are just waiting for our buyers to sign contracts and then we'll have a completion date. Because we've sold our house I didn't bother capping our energy bills or swapping around for better suppliers, and now I'm not sure whether I should have?
I'm a bit naive when it comes to moving house, and don't know if our exisitng suppliers follow us to our new house, or if we use the suppliers the previous occupants used? And in either case, am I tied into any length of time or deemed to have started a new contract? When is the best time to get a new deal on my energy supplies?
Any help and advice greatly appreciated - thanks Money Savers!!

  • When you move you will be with the supplier who currently supplies the property. You can switch and it will take around 6-8 weeks for this to go through. If you switch you usually have to be with your new supplier for at least 28 days. If you chsoe certain tariffs you should check there is no exit penalty, it's becoming more common now.
