Fitting a Fireplace

I have been quoted £450 to have a fireplace fitted. It's a marble one which comes in about 5 sections which are pieced together and a gas fire insert. The previous fireplace has already been removed.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Chickpee :j

I just read your post... Mmm

Without seeing your setup, I would like say that any advice I might share is based upon standard pricing etc etc - if you can provide me specifics, I can provide an answer with a little bit more depth...

    Anyway

£450 does seem a little excessive... Obviously, as I said; without seeing your setup, I can only give a rough answer, but yes, I would say that is a bit high...

You need to go and get a few prices before you proceed with the fireplace installation - I would think you could get it atleast £80 to £100 cheaper than the quote you have been given and in some cases, you may get it cheaper! (Shop around...)

Just out of interest, what type of marble is the fireplace?

    Speak soon,

    Buck

    Hi Buck

    Thank you for your reply.

The fireplace is very similar to this one although the shop I bought it from has gone into liquidation now so I didn't buy it from this link. http://www.emsworth.co.uk/fireplaces-details.asp?fireplace=bramdean

With the previous fireplace already removed, it is just a plaster wall with the original gap for an open fire. The chimney has been swept and we've also fitted a chimney cowl. The gas point is presently capped but is in the right position for the new fireplace.

I must admit I thought the quote was a bit excessive and we are considering doing it ourselves and just getting someone in to fit the gas fire. The person who delivered the fireplace was telling me how easy it was to install but he probably would say that!!

Any way thanks again for your advice. It's much appreciated.
  • Hi Chickpee, :rolleyes2

    I am happy to help.

I have looked at the fireplace in the link you gave and yes, the price you were originally quoted, is way too high. :naughty:

(I can't speak for the website you gave as I am not a member of that company and I have no idea of their pricing structure)

    Price Guide
    • Fireplace and Gas Fire Installation - £280 to £330
    • Gas Fire Installation Only - £140 to £190
The price you pay will depend on the location and company you choose to use, but they all should fall within the price ranges I have stated - (If they are being fair that is!).

You MUST have the gas installation done by a CORGI registered Gas fireplace engineer - (ask to see their registration information) - given that you have already been over-quoted; I say no more...

    I hope this helps?

The fireplace in the picture is Bianco Titanio - is your fireplace also in this type of Marble?

    Speak soon.

It's a composite marble but not sure if it is Bianco Titanio. I should add that the link I gave wasn't the firm that gave me the quote.

Thanks for the Price Guide Buck, it's been very helpful.

  • How much should I expect to be quoted for fitting an open fireplace? At the moment I have it propped up against the wall!! The hearth to be fitted is black slate, the insert is victorian cast iron style and the surround is mdf. The thing just needs securing to the wall! There is already a hole where the original fireplace was. The fireplace will be for decorative purposes only, I will not be lighting a fire in there as i suspect the chinmey will need re-lining.

Edited to say - in actual fact it looks exactly like the fireplace in the aviator above!

  • What would be a fair price for an open fire to be fitted (ie no gas)..
    This is the fireplace:

The chimney has been swept and tested and is sound.

    Thanks
