Costs for going to college , im on IS help

Hi there, my daughter has just enrolled at colleg to do an NVQ in Hairdressing, this is fine, she will get her EMA but i have just had to find £300 (i borrowed it off my 94 yr old Nana) to pay for her uniform (that doesnt include the shoes) and styling kit and to top up her bus pass.
Im a single parent with 2 other young children, i claim child tax credits and child benefit for all 3 kids and was wondering i can get help with these extra costs.
I would appreciate any advice given to me, ive only been a single parent for a few months and im still new to all this.

  • Check with the college to see if there are any bursaries available to help with costs.
  • In fact I'm sure there may be something in the EMA forms regarding this? I know in my daughter's one it referred to travel costs and bursary for equipment but it may well be different in Scotland where I am.
  • Hi there, she can claim for her bus pass but there is a downfall of £52 which we have to pay but i cant find anything about other expenses.

there is also a learner hardship form which will give you money towards uniform and equipment as you are on is you should qualify, if your dd is getting ema she wont be eligable for money for travelling xosts as that is what the ema is meant to cover. Go to the college and try the ema office, and ask about the hardship fund, last year my son was given a card to use in the college shop for printing credits and paper etc. If you have saved your receipts you can claim the money back with the hardship fund, hth
    to be updated:;)

Maybe your daughter can find a part time job to fund the rest of her bus pass which will ease the financial pressure for you :)
